It would be a lot of fun I think. I threw an XXXL Starburst for an entire summer league for kicks once and averaged 180. I couldn't carry the 5 pin very well, much less the 10 (and in some cases both at the same time). I probably hit the pocket with 98% accuracy with that thing just piping it down 10. It was so controllable and smooth. It just didn't carry that well.
The Mark Roth tournament let the qualifiers throw their own plastic, and I'm not sure if they regulated it to pancake cores (not many balls with real cores in the polyester market to begin with). I'd prefer a league that did this to make everyone purchase the same ball, or give the ball to the bowler at no cost and roll it into the linage, etc.
Otherwise you'll create some advantage by letting people throw XXXL's and such.
