Another needed ball recommendation....
« on: June 23, 2004, 08:49:25 AM »
It's difficult to peg what type of ball one of my team mates should get for the new fall season. He tends to throw more of a flinger style, playing straight down the middle of the lane as a righty at about 17 mph. What type of entry level resin or particle ball would you recommend for this style? He's usually a solid 160 average bowler on our team and I would like to get him something that may help carry more 5 pins for his style...

MSC,

If you are saying that he just "flings" it down the middle of the lane, getting a new ball will not help carry those 5 pins.  The reason being that he has no angle on the head pin to drive through and knock out that 5 pin.  This is pretty vague, though, because you have not said anything about rev rate for this guy.  His ball speed is pretty average, but with no knowledge of lane condition and rev rate, it will be hard for us as well to peg that specific ball you are looking for.  If you could help us with that info, it will help us get a better idea on what suggestion for a bowling ball we can give you.  However, if you are specifically looking for an entry level ball, regardless of the other info, something like a Power Groove or Tornado Warning would suit you, or him, just fine.

Swamp Monster
Very strong cover with a simple inverted lightbulb core.
Somthing like that would probably be a good start since it will get into a roll very easy  due to the cover and will be less sensitive to release variations
I learned with a dull urethane which is also easy to control.

Lane conditions that we typically bowl on- for a bad night, a reverse block (significantly drier in the middle, higher amounts of oil from outside of 10 on both sides), on a decent night, more of a short oil flat pattern (usually 22 feet buffed to 34 feet).

As far as his rev rate, I would say a very low rev rate, as his motion through the delivery I see the ball rotate about 6 or 7 times before it hits the pins. That's why I'm thinking anything beyond a mid level resin/particle would be useless for him, as he doesn't play the outside of the lane very much.

And yes, this ball would be specifically for him- I already have 4 with a 5th waiting to be plugged and drilled, and my style is much different than his...
