POCKET 7-10's
« on: March 10, 2007, 03:04:36 AM »
Left 5 pocket 7-10's today in my league today i shot terrible. Any shot i threw seemed good but left 10's, stone 8's, stone 9's, and 7's. I was using my Total NV would either skid too much and i would leave 2-8-10 or 2-10 or my good shots wouldn't even strike. I have no real heavy oil ball but im thinking about adding one even tho i dont bowl in heavy oil that much. What causes pocket 7-10's is it the angle that my ball enters the pocket. Will my revised arsenal cover all conditions
My Current Arsenal is
Total NV
Angular One
Black Widow
Fired Up
Hammer Tuff

Revised Arsenal
Special Agent
Total NV
Angular One
Black Widow
Spit Fire
Fired Up
Purple Vibe
Hammer Tuff

If you hit the pocket too square you have the 7-10. One of my friends from the youth tough shots tour and Guppy Troup's son had 11 in a row then a rip the rack 7-10. It was 4 months after his first 300.

The answer is hidden in your own post.  Remember the part you mentioned about your ball skidding too much and the pocket shots didn't seem to carry?

The pocket 7-10 is usually caused by a ball that finishes reasonably hard, but just a fraction too late.  The later turn causes the ball to enter the pocket at a funny, but hard, angle of entry.

The odd angle of entry causes the pin trajectories to interact in an unusual fashion, leaving the "blowout" 7 pin while also leaving the "wrap" 10 pin simultaneously.

Another clue to this was the mention of 2-10 and 2-8-10 combos. Again, this is caused by too much skid, but is usually a weaker finish ( deflection), causing the headpin to be chopped off the 2 pin, the 5 pin to slide between the 2 & 8 pins, and the 6 pin to lay in the channel and not get the 10 pin out.

Also, the stone 8's and 9's you mentioned, lead me to beleive that your ball was finishing hard MOST of the time, and that some of your carry problems originate from not having just the right reaction and trying to "fiddle around" with your shot, trying to make it carry. Problem is, you can"t "make" your shots carry, but if you have the right ball, you can "let" them carry.  It's just something to remember so that you will know when to try harder and when to just let things happen.

As far as the question of your revised arsenal covering all conditions, that is hard to say, but this much is true. The more options you have available to you, the better the odds of finding something that will work. The addition of the vibes and the special agent have given you a wider array of options and may well have given you what you were needing when most of the carry problems were happening.  For me, it seems like the special agent with an earlier, smoother drill pattern might have helped with your carry problems, but that is taking my game into condsideration and may not have been the answer for you at all.

Good luck with those scores, and don't give up.
