Works just fine, and you can shape it the way you want.  No more using a larger size dam for hole that doesn't need it.  Saves plug as well since you can shape the damn the way you want it.

never used clay. Go out and get a tub of plumbers putty at your local hardware store. a tub will last forever because it is reusable. make sure to press the putty firmly to the ball to prevent leaking.

I've used clay and plumbers putty as well as the 'regular' dams. I'll stick with the 'regular' dams, thank you. The clay is good, press hard, get a good seat. Plumbers putty is (IMO ) a bit better, again press hard. Both take care when taking the 'dams' off and get as much as you can off before cutting the plug. I use a router and the clay/putty left will make a mess on the blade.

Both are OK, one great thing about either, you can 'mold to fit' what ever you need to. Long thin "cuts" in a ball or sizes that may cause a "regular" dam to go to the larger size, you can "cut to fit" with clay or putty.

Good luck.

I use the foam dams.  They are cheap and easy to use.  I do have a set of rubber dams but never use them.
