Wow...what a difference between synthetic and wood!
« on: February 26, 2004, 03:50:21 AM »
I had some free time this afternoon...got off work early due to impending bad weather (snow and golf do not mix!).  Since there were leagues going on at the regular house I bowl in, I called up the other house in town to see what was going on over there...fortunately, no leagues and $.99/game!  Well, I hadn't bowled at this other house since my days of slinging a Black Beauty straight down the lane, in other words, a LONG time!  Also, curiosity was getting the best of me since the City Tournament is this weekend and that house is hosting the singles/doubles...my regular house is hosting the team event.

Anyway, my regular house has synthetic lanes and my normal shot is "down and in" and I've never been able to "play inside" on a consistant basis on these lanes.  I had forgotten that the other house has wood lanes.  Wow, what a difference between the two!  I tried playing my normal "down and in" shot, no dice!  It was a "hook monster" that never even sniffed Brooklyn!  And no, the lanes were not dry...there were well oiled as was evident by the "dripping" track left on my ball after every shot.  It took me about three games to finally get lined up.  I ended up standing on the left side of the approach sending the ball between the third and fourth arrow out to about the fifth board where the ball snapped back to the pocket...definitely a different look than what I am used to seeing, especially considering I don't roll the ball with a lot of revs!  Anyway, after shooting a few pins below my average the first three games, I bounced back "playing it deep inside" by shooting a total of 80 pins over my average for the next three games.

It is really going to be interesting to see the scores this weekend...I hope the "big hookers" at my regular house take their plastic balls with them to the other house for the singles/doubles otherwise they won't have enough lane to play on.

Sawbones,

Unfortunately, I won't be bowling in the tournament...my league team didn't want to bowl and I have to work on Sunday removing any chance of bowling in the doubles/singles tournament.  Although, I did tell the Pro at my regular house if anyone needs an "emergency sub" for Saturday's team event to call me and I can be there in less than 15 minutes.

As for the lane conditions in this other house...I honestly don't see how they can be any different except for maybe drier, or unless they totally flood the lanes which is also a possibility.  Even if they do flood them, I don't think it would be much different than my regular house with heavy oil.  If they are drier than they were tonight, straight ball shooters will do well and the big crankers will be left "hung out to dry" (pun intended)!  As for the condition of the wood...they were pretty worn, much more so than I remember from a long time back.  Unfortunately, I don't think this house has been taken care of very well for quite a while...at least not like my regular house.  I can almost guarantee I will hear lots of complaints about its conditions during league on Monday night.
