Do you own a bowling center or have any type of knowledge of what it takes to run one?  While yes there are some centers catering to that demographic of customers not all do.  The good places try to accommodate all segments of bowlers.  It's no where near as black and white as it used to be in the "golden years" of bowling.

We have two centers (44 lanes & 32 lanes) of which both have done total upgrades in the past two years (new lanes/approaches, remodeling painting, new bathrooms, new and updated bar and snack areas, new carpet,
new paving in parking lot, etc; Simply, both are a place to be proud to bowl at.
Both centers has cosmic/glow bowling only on Sat. night.  All the other days and nights are full with leagues.
Sorry, but I would say all the improvements were not done to create a nightclub or disco.  They were done to make a great place to league bowl.

Rather then 20 songs they should have 3 staffers and 12 songs. the back hunched underarmed golf swing for 5 is not bowling. I never saw over 140 at cosmo.

God, or whatever deity to whom you pray, has obviously blessed you, bowling-wise. I have not been so lucky, but I have moved to 2 new centers. Hopefully I will learn soon (as soon my hamstring strain/tear heals) if I have chosen wisely or not. I am in 2 very different centers, both run by independents. Funny, as each is 45 minutes away from me in opposite directions.

Bowling centers that are profitable remain open for everyone, league bowlers included.

It's an expensive business.  I've seen it first hand for the past 7 years.  We need ALL bowlers.  League bowlers, open play, the birthday parties, the corporate parties...  All of it.

In an age when bowling centers are closing at increasing rates don't argue because they turn on the black lights according to schedule.  If you don't like black light bowling then drop by when the normal lights are on.  It really IS that simple.

Just thinking, maybe they are taking steps to improve. Songs and Disco Lights are not that expensive. IF that brings more people into bowl, then maybe other upgrades will happen in the future.

It's dark here at night, so black lights would be of little use...

Rock N Bowl Revenue (food/drinks/rentals etc) in some places can estimate out to around $150+/hour per lane. Birthday parties can be even more.

If you want bowling centers to stay open for your league play, you're going to have to accept the cosmic bowling for what it is. In a lot of cases it's the only way your center can recoup the revenue lost all morning & afternoon to keep the lights on.

Follow the link below my signature and click on the Draper location, then take the virtual tour.  I'm one of three managers there, and we're doing well.  Our bar has 12 lanes inside, and often a 2 hour wait list on Friday and Saturday night.  We're 70,000 square feet of bowling, bumper cars, mini golf, arcade, 2 banquet rooms, 7 party rooms, and a full restaurant.

We just finished the summer months that are tough for every bowling center, but so far we're beating the same month's revenues from last year typically 25% - 35%. But it takes a small army to staff that place with servers waiting on the lanes and tables, bartenders, desk help, prize redemption help, and cooks, dishwashers, a sales dept., call center, etc.   It's expensive before we even pay the utilities, but so far doing well.

Our owner has his own brewery with 12 or so craft beers in addition to the domestic beers that sell, not to mention a full liquor license.  We do lots of corporate events, which can really help the bottom line.   We're not perfect, and have lots of room for improvement, but the business model is profitable.  Before this I spent 6 1/2 years in two of our traditional bowl centers, and saw their struggles as well as their strengths.

My point is that if your bowling center just closed it didn't do so because it was making too much money...  I hope to bowl til I die, but that means that my bowling centers need to stay open.

Thanks. Luckily I don't have to pay the bills, just try hard to keep it all running.
