Help settle a disagreement...
« on: January 19, 2005, 02:58:33 AM »
We have a little disagreement (nothing hostile) on another board about what happens when an 8 pin is left (righty bowler).  Some (most) seem to think it is from the ball deflecting in the pocket and sliding the 5 in front of it rather than knocking it down.  I think it is from the ball driving too hard (not deflecting enough) and taking the 5 straight back.  What do you think?

It can be both, depending on the hit.

It can be both but most of the time when a solid 8 is left on a rightie its because the ball drove the 5 straight back on a flush hit.

And yes - the answer to the question is both - but not at the same time.

I would have to disagree that it can be both.  If you slide the five in front of the eight, it would suggest that your ball did not impact the five properly in the 1-3-5-9 chain.  A hit where the five slides in front of the eight would have been an 8-10 twenty tears ago.  The five straight back is the only true solid 8.

Believe what you like.

I agree urethane game, if the 5 goes in front of the 8, then it was most likely a light hit that didnt carry out that back part of the dinner bucket (the 8).

Both are popular... today it is more of the 5 going stright back on flush shots. However, in my day 8's were left because the head pin after hitting the 2 pin would fly back into the 5 and move it before the ball got there and then the ball would push the 5 straigh back. But with todays more aggressive entry angles.. the head pin does not get in the way and the ball simply chops the 5 striaght back.

depends on the house pattern... one house i've left weak 8's (5 infront of the 8) cause the oil is long.  the other is a stone 8 cause of plain bad luck...stone 8 is only true tap in bowling.

Anytime you are dealing with a round ball and 10 round oblong pins 60 feet away, there can be some weird stuff that can happen. Solid 8's suck, no doubt about it, but thats an easy spare. Now, a crush flush 7/9 for a rightie, now thats a real killer.
