Wrist Problems
« on: March 12, 2004, 06:42:11 PM »
Last year I developed tendonitis in my wrist, went through rehab, and now have it back again. I am a tweener that likes to come up the back of the ball and swing it. I am wondering if this is a common problem, and if going to a 15lb ball or a relaxed fingertip drilling would help. I am in a panic because I love the game but right now am having all kinds of trouble and actually embarrassing myself with recent scores. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a few wrist problems as well but my wrist only seemed to get sore after I played never while I was on the lanes. I talked to a new driller about 18 months ago and he laid a few balls out very differently to the lay out I had for years. He first gave my an offset thumb about half inch and gave me 1/4 reverse on my fingers cause I have a short but powerful fingers. This allowed the ball to sit more in the palm of my hand and resulted in a more powerful release with less effort in the wrist you may want to experiment with different pitches in ur equiptment may be the reason why you got the tendonitis in the first place. GOOD LUCK!

first, i think switching to 15# will definitely take strain off your wrist.  my father did that a few years ago, and his scores went up while his pain went down.  the offset drilling will probably work too, because the conventional style is not the most natural hand position for a normal backswing.  also, try and make sure that the grips and thumb are comfortable without having to struggle to get a good grip.  last year when we had drastic weather changes in new york city, my fingers and thumb changed so much that i always had to force my hand into a comfortable position, and guess what...i started having wrist pain.  any or all of these should help...if u dont have vise grips already, that should make your grip as comfortable as possible.  make sure your span is correct, and try experimenting with an old ball to get a comfortable feel.  good luck with whatever u decide to do.

I would seek a different proshop for advice on your grip. Pain should not be a part of bowling. The majority of bowlers that I have worked with that experience wrist problems are due to poor grips which induce squeezing to hold the ball..usually related to too long of a span and too much reverse to compensate and secondly, the thumb hole being significantly too large.  Remember, the ball should hold onto you and you should not hold onto the ball.
