"Average doldrums".
« on: March 12, 2004, 10:58:17 AM »
I am now in what I call the "average doldrums". Every year I go through a period of time when all that I can shoot is my average. Every night I shoot 610 or 612 or 606 or 604 or 600 or 608. Just average. I can not get any big games and I am not throwing any bad games. I go through this period every year. It sometimes drives me crazy. Sometimes I would rather shoot bad and change someting and re-group rather then shooting average again. Does anyone have the magic potion to cure my "average doldrums". My balls need to take steroids!

This week think about how you are going to absolutely CRUSH'EM on league night. Think about it each time you think about your upcoming league night. Do not think about the past several average weeks, think only about the weeks you were on fire. Be positive, confident, loose........then bowl league and light em up!

Change something in a big way!  Play the second board with a go longer ball, or move deeper with you regular ball and slow down, or move out and start with a bigger hooking ball a foot higher than normal.  Those will change your scores, I garantee!  Trying something differnt sometimes works for the better and is always fun.  You never know until you try.

Try something subtle like a little more wrist cup to give the ball a tiny more pop into the pocket or cock your wrist to the side a little more to make the ball skid a little longer.  Maybe just a little adjustment will get the strikes comming in bunches.  (Or the splits)

does the score really matter? No, only execution. If you have done your best at reading lanes, reading entry angle and reading ball reaction then that is the best for that night. Go home and find some articles to read and study. Next time you might have some new things to try. Dont focus on scores focus on execution. I am willing to bet, at the end of the night, you will note significant improvement.

And yes, I think we all go through these spells.

Average doldrums? Try being high series in the league with a 555, that's what happened to me last week. My average in my Tuesday league has dived 8 pins in 2 months- but then again so has the rest of the league. I've been trying to stay consistent in terms of release, spare leaves and try to get those doubles and triples when I can.

In other houses I've been averaging 205-210, so I can't complain that much.
