WhyisIT?
« on: May 13, 2009, 05:05:21 PM »
I just joined a league this summer, my first in a year and a half. I've been practicing this winter, with bowling equipment That I thought would help my game! Man, After 2 weeks i feel that I want to quit! I've been bowling for 44 years, and i can't belive that, in all the equipment that I've bought, I'm using some that I've haven't used in 6-8 years! I can't understand that the place were I bowl, Can't put a decent shot out!
I know that some of you, may think That I'm a crybaby, that I need a easier shot, or can't ajust to what out there! It's that they sell or push the high price bowling balls, then put out a dry shot It's not because they don't have the new kegal lane machines to put down a pattern, This is so frustrating to me, That they should sell lower priced bowling balls, and not deceived the public. I think that the usbc should rate the lanes, so every one would know what there getting into!
These lanes just a few years ago used to be the best lanes in town...Not anymore...in my opinion and by the way, they do have oil up front, but there very dry. or squeaky clean in the back! What I think is a good shot, ISn't! Not only i'm I frustrated by the shot for two weeks in a row the right lane has a bit more oil, the left hook more! And let's not forget about some of the pins being offcenter!!!!! I'm just about ready to start using their own plastic balls, and throwing up the middle...  Just call me sandbagger!

A Kegel oil machine in good working order will put down the exact pattern that is programmed in it.  Don't blame the machine.  --  JohnP

I'm not blaming the machine, just the owners who tell the employee what to program the machine. And I thought I would go to the lanes, this afternoon, just to see how the lanes are...started out 20-8, then had to go 28-12,
just like on monday nights...They where also putting out the pba viper conditions on the first 16 lanes. Well I guess all the time I put in with my coach, video, practice, I'm going to stop getting more revolutions on my ball...and throw it more up the back

And I also found an undrilled black rhino in my garage!

Well Today,my son and I went this morning, just to see what will happen if we bowled this morning! I always use a wrist brace, didn't even wear it, and rolled the ball from 6 o'clock to 4:30 release, and rolled games of 224-245-190, tried a different ball last game. Still about 47 to 50 foot the ball starts screaming to the head pin .My son looks at me and says "YOU NEED MORE SPEED"! At the age of 50 (OLD not to OLD) I just can't do that anymore! Ah...youth, to be young again

Sir,   according to Mo,,  1:30 is a time of day....

Now you must talk proper bowling talk....

You meant put the pin 4 1/2" to the pap with a 1" pin buffer....And the MB 6" to the pap...

If they are as dry as you say,  that is still too strong....

Put the pin over or under you MF, MB in track....trust me

jls

JLS I like the idea on where he should put the Pin and MB however, depending on his PAP this could be a very strong layout. So I would say place the Pin 6-6 1/2" from PAP, 2 1/2" from VAL and the MB 6" from VAL. This should get you a real long and basicly do nothing reaction.

Hello to all, and thank's to everyone who answered to this. Well, i've tried just about everything in my garage, so tomorrow at league I'm going to try the following.

1 v2 particle,polished 1 1/2 inch pin
2 v2 reactive, polished 2 3/4 inch pin
3 v2 pearl reactive polished 4" pin
4 v2 dry particle polished 4" pin

I'm hoping to just outscore my son, I only beat him by 14 stick's last week.

he rolled his first 500 series at the age of 10 I just hope I can keep up with him

Keep your ball super polished.  Your pro shop can help you with that.  Not the Luster King.  Just tell them you want it to go really really long.  There's some polishes out there that will put a super polish on the ball.

I think you also have to be patient with yourself.  You're on the comeback tour that many have also experienced after a time off from the sport.  Give yourself some time.  New lane machines are incredibly expensive.  Putting in synthetic lanes are very expensive.  So if your center doesn't have the revenue to do these improvements you'll have to deal with it.  Unfortunately it will be frustrating for a while.  You are also learning a characteristic of the center.  The left lanes hook more.  In a perfect world bowling centers would have updated laneoiling machines, newer pin setters and nice bouncy side boards, lanes that are not old and feathered.  But most of the time its not a perfect world.  And even if the owner wanted to make it better the investment is so overwhelming that they cannot do it.

heres some things ive learned over time that you can do:

drill something pin axis... takes the core out of the equation and should push you further right and straighter as the core wont want to tip up as the ball encounters friction.

OR

have some extender polish put on one of your balls. it will reduce the friction the ball sees more then just regular polish.

and

come up the back of the ball like you talked about. coming more to the side of the ball would promote more skid but also a more violent reaction off of the dry... not so easy to control that on a walled up THS.

I used to cry and moan when the lanes were hard but one of my team mates was always bowling in the 2-teens... so I kept watching his game and realized that hes using equipment not much different then I was... so whats his secret. his release! he was generating the right amount of tilt and staying behind the ball which helped to blend out the pattern.

BUT I do feel your pain. VERY dry lanes can really be a true pain in the butt when it comes to reactive bowling balls. I live in NJ and oily lanes are hard to come by.... thankfully a couple of lanes have been putting out a decent shot.

Have you asked them about it.  We give out lane information sheets on request.
Be prepared.  Centers hear a lot from people that can only play up the second arrow.  If you keep your cool and speak with them intelligently most centers will work with you.  If you come off as an idiot you will be treated badly.  If you are nice you will most likely be treated good.

This is so frustrating to me, That they should sell lower priced bowling balls, and not deceived the public.

People walk into a pro shop and say "sell me a ball that hooks".  My response is tell me about your game and how you want it to react.  If I get an "I don't know" we can go to the lane and look but in the 15 minutes watching you it's hard to tell your complete bowling life history.  Many cases people read the hype, expect that the gee wiz bang ball is going to turn them into Wes Malott or Tommy Jones regardless of their ability.  I would say well over 75% of the general bowling public doe not know anything about equipment they throw or are looking to buy.  They also have a very poor amount of knowledge on lane conditions.  Many pro shop customers want a corvette and will not be happy unless they get one.  When it doesn't work it is easier to lay blame on the shop.

This is very normal.  The heads contain most of the oil and the backends are dry on almost every bowling lane in the world.  Asking for a lane spec sheet would help with this.  Have you been taken down the lane and inspected it with the center staff?  Have you compared other peoples averages over the last 2 to 3 years?  Lanes on a pair can have differences and it is common.  I know of centers that rotate open play.  One month it is all done on the right lane the next is the left lane.  many centers have a 2 board shot difference between lanes.

Many people become very frustrated with the sport from time to time.  Proprietors do not make things bad just to piss customers off.  There are simple reasons for many common center issues.  The more knowledge a bowler has the better they score and the happier they are.

Good God I wish I had the patience to type this stuff out. Thank you Smash.  Great points on how a center and proshop works.  Bowling centers aren't trying to purposfully mess with bowlers.  There are reasons why things are happening why they are.

I was in the local unemployment office waiting to be seen, and low and behold in walk's in the mechanic who works at the bowling lanes! We got to talking about the lanes and things, and I found out that the machine has been worked on,and the tape device wasn't reading correctly, and the computer that read the tape, the program was on the fritz! He was telling me that the shot was 40', then stripped to the end of the pin deck. It was to be a 3:1 ratio oiling from the 5 boards in. So with the information, we started practice, started out with a clean 232. 2nd game wasn't so lucky the 1 pin on lane 3 was leaning towards the 2 pin left me a 7-10 in the 6th frame, and had a 221 game, I swear I've never reracked so many time in the 3rd game, still pulled out a 197 game for a 650 series. All with the polished v-2particle! And by the way my son also had games of 188-200-152 for another 540 series. And he's just 10!!!
