What is your oil pattern?
« on: January 29, 2004, 01:25:38 AM »
I got to thinking about what everyone bowls on.

I never get to bowl on a fresh shot during league.  The middle of the lane is usually gone after the open play bowling and the first league.

I do practice on a fresh shot though.

I talked with the Laneman today and this is the info I got from him. ABC just came out and verified/graphed the lanes. The oil is Legend medium viscosity 40 feet. 4 units 0-5, 10 units 5-10 and 40 units 10-10 in the middle. The heaviest concentration is up front 15 feet then slowly tapering out 2 to 1 at 40.  By the way these are synthetics.

So what is the pattern that you bowl on?

sounds like what I bowl on.

the lanes are oil in the mourning and right before our league. not stripped. 1/3 synthetics and 2/3 wood.

if you toss a game before the laneman hits it it is a pretty wide open shot. much like every video shown on this site recently.

after the second oiling they become a very wet/dry shot. so depending on were every one is playing and if the oil machine put down the right amount of oil. it can break down in very interesting ways.

people who spray it with a big swing shot don't fare to well. you can spay it but going up the boards less swing so you hit the dry later. as long as you keep it to a 5 board swing max like a 10 to 4 or 12 to 10 the backend opens up and you have a lot of room to get back to the pocket. if you are going 20 to 5 then it's over under and a  lot of crying from flingers.

At the school I goto I work in the on campus bowling alley so I get to put out anything I want.  I like to practice on a flat 33 ft pattern and a flat 41 ft pattern.  Ranging from 40-60 units.  The lanes are synthetic and it's always very humid in the bowling alley so it makes for an interesting transition.
