Bones, Doc Hollywood, or anyone
« on: October 13, 2004, 05:29:42 AM »
The resident pro subbed on my team last night and he has a problem.  Wondered if anyone had an idea what's going on.  When the throws the ball, if he really hits it, or even if he just comes up the back it hurts his thumb.  Seems to be on the back side of the thumb, at the base.  No swelling.  I'm thinking somehow he stretched/tore a ligament?  Am I close?  and, being the savants/swamis that you are, what should he do for it?

'Bones, his span was correct, I'm sure of that.  HOWEVER, he changed his pitch a bit (from 3/8 reverse to 1/8 forward) and that, in turn, may have changed his span.  We did discuss that last night.  Thanks for your reply.

Rags - If he changed his pitch to forward that much he would definitely need to adjust the span as well.

It sounds like a mild strain.  Quite possibly due to bowling.  Changes like this can cause problems if not corrected.  Rest and ice massage can do wonders in a matter of a few days to weeks.  If not handle quickly these can turn into a career ending problem.

I once had a bowler who strained the tendons in his ring finger and wrist.  Major instability and would not let it heal.  Kept coming back too fast.  It almost killed his bowling living.  Made quite a bit of money pot bowling.  I convinced him to take nearly a year off.  I worked with him and slowly got rid of the pain and strengthened him back stronger than before and got him back to bowling better and making more money than ever before.

Bottom line don't take the injury too lightly and get the thumb checked out as well as the drilling.  There's nothing like having to quit something you love when your not ready to.

Rag,
The changing of pitch is probably where he is getting his problem. Does he use finger grips? When you change pitch in the thumb......lets use his as an example: 3/8 reverse to 1/8 forward....when you go forward in the thumb you must also go reverse in the fingers or you will end up locking yourself into the ball. I believe (don't hold me to this) that the "rule" says for every 1/8 you go forward with the thumb you should go 1/16 reverse in the fingers.

Another factor in his thumb hurting (which results from the pitch change again, if no span adjustment) could be that he is is getting more suction upon exiting the ball which could have caused that strain or pull in the tendon<<<I see this as likely because if he is putting more pressure on this thumb when trying to hit up on the ball that would cause it to hang up more.

I suggest he take a bit of time off to let that heal, then when he makes the come back have him try an old ball he may have lying around with the old pitch and see if the thumb is ok with that pitch again. Maybe less of a move forward would be better. 3/8 reverse to 1/8 forward is a huge jump to take all at once.

Thanks guys.  I told him while we were bowling that he probably needed to rest it and ice it.  I'll ask him about his finger pitches - I didn't think of that at the time.
