What would you do if you were USBC president for a day?
« on: November 06, 2006, 10:33:08 AM »
What rules would you make or unmake?
What positive impact would you have on the sport of bowling?

I'm just curious to see the opinions of those who love to critize and dont purpose solutions.

One of the first things *I* would do is ensure that adequate protections were put into place to prevent the inappropriate disclosure of the identifying data of the membership.

That is a task that the current regime seems incapable of handling on their own...

Ban all balls expect for 16# wooden balls, ban synthetic lanes, ban oil machines (only spraying on oil from now on, and make it so that random places on the lane have more or less oil, even more challenging than a reverse block or flat pattern, and I mean in terms of up and down the lane AND side to side, any given square inch of lane will be different than the rest), ban automatic scorers, ban finger grips thumb slugs and any other such devices, ban the use of the phrases "CG, Pin, Mass bias" or any variant thereof, replace lane oil with actual oil, ban towels (deal with the oil), ban.. hrrm, uh...Well I can't think of anything else right now for my power trip, I'll let you know later.

Forget making 200 a respectable average, I'd be out to make 180 bowlers the new gods.

I would fire most everyone that is employeed by the USBC and hire some folks that have actually bowled, people that have common sense, and people that actually know the sport. Most of their rules and the way they go about things are just plain bone-headed and flat out stupid. I am going to try to find a way to not give them my money next season.

Extend the unopposed bowling rule to lefties in league play if they have no one else on their side.  If it is not sporting to bowl by yourself, it is the same thing lefties have been doing all these years.  LOL.

Seriously though,

I would put all of sanctioned bowling on a 5 year revolving pin total database. Meaning your pins follow you from year to year and league to league. No more starting from ZERO every season when the new leagues start.

This would help eliminate sandbagging since one wouldn't be able to just bowl bad for a few weeks to start a league off in order to get some pins for the rest of the year. If you bowled 3 leagues and averaged 200 for those leagues, with each league having about 100 games, that would give you about 60,000 pins after just one season. Let's say you try to bag the first week of a new league, shooting only 450. That would bring your average down to 199.5 instead of being 150 after one week.

Now imagine the numbers if 5 years worth of pins followed you around.

My point is that golf's handicapping system is an ongoing thing, with no seasons and with every stroke counting from year to year.

Our "book" averages are calculated this way in France, except their is no limit on the time.  In fact, every month, the corresponding month of last year is discounted.  This means that your average is over the last twelve months.  We do not start from zero every year.  Not the best system, because sandbagging is still possible, but better than starting over every year.

There would be a mandate that over the next three years the lanes would have to be oiled progressively closer (4:1, 3:1, 2:1) to flat oil so that in the forth year, 2010, every sanctioned house would have the US Open oil pattern standard for league play.  The house could determine how much oil to apply based on the condition of the lanes and the likes of the bowlers, but it would have to be flat, gutter to gutter, and applied to exactly forty feet.  No scores bowled on any other condition would count towards an average to be used in any sanctioned tournaments.

Restore some credibility to to the game!  No more being rewarded for making bad shots.  If you can't execute good shots you don't score.

Approve Robert Mushtare's first....ticy tacy rejection...nothing to do with bowling.  Approve Glenn Allison's ticy tacy rejection of a 900 also.

Make Splitz vice president and commission him to do a study on the effects of low scoring on the attendance of bowlers at league play.  90% of whom only bowl once a week!

I should have stated constructive comments...

The only way to make a positive change is by making positive constructive comments towards an eventual goal is making the USBC something that people feel properly represent them.

Move the headquarters out of Wisconsin, there's too much cheese there.

As another said, clean house there and in the ineffective local associations as well. Push responsibility down to the local levels as they are the ones with a vested interest and should know and understand what's going on at the local levels. Engage the proprietors and equipment manufacturers to share more control as they have the vested financial interest in the future of the game.

Get out of bed with the NCAA, stop worrying about the 18 states with high school bowling and support scholarship opportunities as a way of increasing opportunities for youth bowlers whether certified or not.

And last but not least....remember where the money comes for your paycheck. It's the dues paying members who should be benefiting from membership, not the other way around.

Easy:

1:  MAKE the "OPEN tournament" the mens again or drop the womens tourney.  They shouldn't get to bowl in two......

2:  Kingpin Mustares hand.

3:  Bring back the coasters.....okay, I'm just playing with that one.

4:  Give out rings for all spare games.
