How much does the weather affect lanes???
« on: April 02, 2004, 09:33:58 AM »
I have noticed some noticable changes in the lanes since the change in the seasons and was just wondering how much the weather affects the lane conditions?

yeah the dampness in the thumb has got me lateley but the weird one is that the oil at times seems to be soo thick that the ball seems to fight to get down the
lane. Sometimes the ball fights soo hard it reminds me of glue even though its not..

The center I bowl in doesn't have a double door airlock at the entrance and it is only about 50ft to the lanes.  When it is humid outside, lanes 7-8 will get really strange.

They are right in front of the doors and on nights when it rains, they seem to get slick as ice. Just hope I don't catch them on nights like that.

The building is old and humidity seems to affect the pins also.  They seem not to carry good ( like they are heavy or something ) during humid days.

The weather (temp & humidity) will affect
- your hands
- your thumb (size and friction within the thumb hole)
- your fingers
- the lane oil (its dissipation and carry-down rate)
- the approaches
- your soles
- the friction of a ball upon the oil upon the lane surface
- the whole 9 yards!

Phatdon,

Child or adult, king-pin is the type of person this website does not need. As you so aptly point out and, if I may paraphrase his apparent problem, "ignorance is bliss". Thankfully, he and his posts are easy to "ignore".

All I gotta say is you fvcking people our fvcking morons. When do you determine this when bowling is over and you bowled like shiit and see it's wet outside so you blame it on the weather. Pinch yourself and wake the fvck up and realize you just bowled like shiit. And thats all there is to it!

I mean really when your bowling like crap do you look outside to see if it's raining or if it's cold? Well if you do your a moron. Just face the fact your sucking that night and thats all there is to it! Oh the stars and moon weren't in line tonight so I sucked. What ever I laugh when you blame it on the weather. I know I'll hear some shiit but if I do It's from dumb people who need to make excuses. JUST BOWL!!!!!

When it comes to bowling I got balls!

This was totally un called for, There was no need to post that. like they said no one said they bowled like crap. This was the reason why I asked in an ealier post if there was a forum admin. This site does not needs children like this.

If hes a 31 yr old kid, and im only 21... what does that make me.

Woudlnt the weather have an effect on the lanes if they were wood, warping them and such.  Kinda like that door you can never close in the summer, but you can slam all day in the winter.    just my .2

That is the point of this whole topic, I am wondering if the weather has an effect or not, It's not cause anyone is bowling bad. I was just sitting at the lanes one day and just wonmdered does it have an effect? If yes what kind of effect?

fiber_cut -- The following link will take you to the PBA "oldtimers" forum.  Access the Billy Hardwick thread, which is now at 18 pages long.  It is all well worth reading, but in the last couple of pages The Phantom, who dressed the lanes for the PBA for years, has begun to address weather effects on lane conditions, and has promised to get into more detail in future posts.  --  JohnP

We have fairly new Bruns Anvil Lanes, and approaches, and one change we notice is that when the humidity gets above 50%, the approaches get VERY tacky!  We have the gauges right above lanes 4-5 and if you start to stick, you look up and I guarentee you'll find the humidity just topped 50-55%, everytime!

Regardless of the surface, weather conditions will affect lane conditions and the rate at which they breakdown.

Many centers will adjust their oiling patterns for the summer to help the bowlers adapt to the change. While I do not have the answer to exactly what happens I can say that I have seen a huge difference thezse last 2 weeks here in PA. Temps have been up and down along with the raina nd snow and nice weather.

I bowler in the same house, on the same 2 lanes and used the same equipment last week. The only difference was one day it was 40* outside and teh other day it was 60*. There was a huge difference in ball reaction. On the colder day the oil carried down much faster and the shot literally disappeared. On the warmer day the breakdown was minimal and , eventhough carrydown existed it did not prevent me from getting into the pocket and carrying.

So one thing many of us need to remember....before blaming the lane man, many of us need to look at the lane OWNER since he is usually the one comtrolling the thermostat, A/C and the opening/closing of the doors.
