This may be the same as inverted is describing, but. When I am having trouble following the ball I always point my index finger (while keeping it in line with my forearm) toward my target. I bowl down and in a lot so it seems to work well for me. I also have noticed that to really stay behind the ball for ME I have to feel some weight on my thumb, even tho this feels awkward without a ball in my hand. With a ball, it just feels right.

Isn't the first finger and the index finger the same or am I missing something? If they are the same, then how do you spread your first (index) finger and then you say keep it tucked in tightly?

I bowl a straighter line more often than nought. If I want to keep my hand behind the ball I will keep my index finger tight against my middle finger.
If I want to come up the side of the ball more I will spread my index finger wide apart.
