Title: Youth League Coaches...
Post by: Willaby Rags on September 08, 2007, 06:18:24 AM
Just curious, those of you that volunteer/coach/run a youth league, what kind of kick-backs does the house offer?  Free/discounted bowling, Pro-shop discounts, snack bar discounts?  Do you get paid? Nothing?

Free game coupons, that's about it.  I used to coach at another center and we got pop for a quarter and a 20% discount at the snack bar (but the snack bar was horrid so I rarely ate the food)

Good Lord!!! Id love to have just 1 of those at the center I coach at. The coaches here don't get anything for their time voluteered. Could be why we are always needing coaches for our youth leauge. Im gonna talk with the house proprietor and see what can be done for the coaches to get something equipment related for 1 time use or weekly discounts at the bar.....that probably wont happen as our snack bar is closed most of the time. They are only open from 5PM till 9:30PM.

The center I currently coach at, we get 9 free games per week.  The center I coached at when my kids bowled Youth Leagues, we got 6 games per week.

We get paid $7.50 a week. That is put on a card that can be used for open bowling or the snack bar. It is not much and I told them not to worry about it, but I still get it put on my card each week. Kids seem to use it more then I do for drinks and snacks.

The reward is in helping the young kids to enjoy and appreciate a sport that we love so much! I thank God for the gift that He's given me and my gift to Him is to share that with others especially the young people that bowl in our center. I wouldn't even consider getting paid for helping, I guess that's why they call it being a volunteer! Do it for the love of the game and for the love of the young people! One day these kids will look back at this time and remember what you've done for them and when it's their turn, it'll help them in their decision! From me to you, thanks for helping in a young persons life! Bruce

where i coach we dont get anything, we have to pay full price for drinks, any games we bowl after youth league is regular price, no incentives whatsoever from the house

but i still do it because i love working with the kids and love the game of bowling, but it would be nice if the house showed a little appreciation to the coaches

The owner lets my 2 kids bowl for free in the youth leagues and I get free practice games.  The manager gives me free snack bar as well (drinks and lunch).  I am the youth director for the house and coach two morning leagues and one afternoon league on Saturday so I am there most of the day.

Our other coaches get the same deal.

I would still coach without these incentives, but it is nice to have the owner and manager recognize our efforts.

does'nt compensation defeat the purpose of volunteering??

No kickbacks or cash compensation.  I volunteered to help the youth bowlers get better by passing down all the bowling knowledge from years from bowling.  That's the reward that I get.

But if you were to volunteer at the Boston Marathon, you would get food and drinks before, during or after the event.

Do not get me wrong, I understand what you are saying. But most people do it to help promote the sport. Getting a free coffee, soda, games or a discount in the proshop would help bring in more coaches.

I coached this past winter league and the owner would not even give anyone a coffee or a soda. But also got upset if we brought in a coffee. I understand that you are not allowed to bring in outside food and drink, but what is the difference in that or bringing in a cake for the birthday party.

I can see "PAYING" the coaches for their time and effort. Drinks, games or discounts, up to the center as to what and how much.

I get 5 free games for every day that I coach.  My son, who is in the Junior Bowling League, gets a special rate for practice games and free shoe rental.  Also get to attend a banquet for free at the end of the season.

I believe there is a fine line between volunteering and working.  I don't just coach, I collect/balance money, submit awards, hand out shoes, insert pre-bowling scores...etc.  The center has cut back employees for youth league because they don't have to do anything but enter in how much money we give them.  I agree with volunteering for the sake of volunteering, but to spend so little time actually coaching doesn't feel like volunteering.  I became certified out of pocket, and I don't even have any kids.  I guess I'd just like a little appreciation.

Two years ago (my last year as a youth bowler): The league director was a paid position, coaches / volunteers were not but received 90 games / month, $.50 coffee and drinks, half off other food items.

Last year (first year as a youth coach / director): paid positions removed, volunteers only, lower pricing on food items removed due to abuse of privilege, 90 games reduced to 45 with the caveat that games could only be used to perform coaching to kids outside of the league setting.

This year, I am not entirely sure, although it is safe to assume it is the same as last year. Does not matter much to me, the perks were certainly not the reason I went to the centre each week.

Nothing.  I ran a youth bowling program at a 10 lane center for 5 years.

I co-coached a youth hockey team Bantams and Midgest for 10 years and got nothing.

I coached a Little League team for 8 years.  Nothing.

Those efforts on my part were my volunteer community service work for my life.  Didn't expect anything for it and figure I am a better person for it. <I like kids.> Those that don't do any volunteer work during their lives are dregs to society in my twisted vision of how society functions.

Isn't it fun how a few idiots can ruin things for everyone?  At the previous center, coaches got as much free bowling as we wanted.  Until a couple coaches started bringing in friends and signing for all their games.  One guy was a Silver level coach who gave lessons on the side and none of his students (kids and adults) had to pay for lineage because he signed for them.  Most of us, would bowl MAYBE 10-15 games a week, but when you have a couple guys signing for 50-100 per week that privilage can dissappear in a hurry.  It got reduced to 3 per day after that.
