« on: July 21, 2006, 01:32:33 PM »
I just want to get a clear understanding of this, they got rid of the rings totally or u can still get the rings but u have to pay for them? I thought u could still get the rings if u payed for them like we used too.

they way it goes is that we no longer get the rings UNLESS, we pay for the cost of the ring.  Assuming they still have the cheaper rings available for purchase it will be around 50 bucks for the cheap ring and then same price for the gold one (I believe).  its really just a whole bunch of horse crap that the USBC is pulling.  actually am writing up a letter right now to fight this, but I'm going to make sure I have ALL of my facts straight first.  but in answer to your question, yes we can still purchase the rings.  we just don't get them for free anymore.

Oh okay, it is a bunch of bull, but at least we can pay for them. I mean we pay a sanction fee every year so we should prolly get the rings for free, but w/e as long as we can still get them.

It's not the USBC fault.  The problem resides with the NCAA and eligability.  If you would like to become ineligable for any sport you play then the rings would be fine.  Fact is less than 1% of all youth bowlers qualified for honor score awards.  Less than 1%.  Excepting the ring could cost you a college scholarship even to play another sport if I understand the last few lectures I sat through.  At least the USBC is willing to provide something and is working to resolve the issue.  They could have told the 1% that qualify "that's nice have a good day".  Right now there are a lot of issues going on that involve scholarships and awards.  There will be restrictions placed on the way scholarships and awards are to be handled.      There needs to be some control over the way these things are handled because it can jeopardize a youth bowlers future.  The USBC is going to take a stand.  This move has to be done and all the complaining will solve nothing.  I do not envy the people at USBC at all they have a big and difficult job fixing some large problems in the Youth bowling world.

What is the big problem?!

I hear they want all the youth tournaments/leagues/organizations that have anything to do with scholarship money to put them in SMART. I think thats crap!

I hear Roger Dalkin said "Junior Bowlers would much rather have a pat on the back than a ring for shooting 300." How nice is that!?

Smash, does this mean that the boys and girls need to seperate as USBC youth organizations. Being that the girls are NCAA and the guys are not yet, let's tell the guys hey you get screwed again right?! I don't understand this. You say less than 1% of Jr. Bowlers qualify for awards. So tell me how many of those less than 1% are FEMALE COLLEGIATE BOWLERS?!?!? That they need to remove the fact that the youth get rings still!??! Please clarify this for me? Maybe I am stupid here? I was to once a jr bowler pretty active in all parts of it too! But it has been awhile. So help me out here to understand please!

okay, i think that we shouldnt have to pay sanctioning fees if we dont get rings. the upgrade ring is between $300-600 depending on what you shoot. i think that we should NOT have to pay sanctioning fees.

George

You would not believe what a mess this really is.  The USBC back when it was the YABA had I think know idea about what problems the awards could cause.  From what I understand even the boys are in trouble because it can effect them for others sports including football, baseball and basketball.  There are so many different ruling bodies and organizations that cross each others jurisdiction you would not believe.  Every state has different rules, then you have the NCAA and so on.  I am the first one to tell you that youth bowlers need to be recognized but fighting the USBC on this one is a losing battle.  Why???  because most of these organizations other than USBC have no idea about any thing that may violate college rules.  They just say lets have a scholarship, oh yeah that's a good idea and without thinking can ruin an athletes college career.  Th USBC is doing the research to take control of youth bowling so that it will be done right.  Some of it I agree with other parts I'm not so sure.  If they do take it over at least you will have a governing body to contact for rulings.  When it gets down to it there are to many people breaking the rules of state and national organizations that control organized sports.  Whether they know they are or not is not the point.  Even if they do by accident the youth bowler loses.  I sat through the meetings the last week of June.

Well I finally got a taste of the new awards program this week.  I had 2 bowlers that shot 100 pins over average at the Texas State Youth Tournament.  One got the watch and the other got the patch.  The patch is about 1 and a half times the size of a silver dollar.  It looks good for a patch.  The watch is by Sweda.  Here is the link to watches that are like the one we received.

http://www.swedausa.com/frontend/proddisp.asp?co=10000202

It is by no means a Rolex!  It still looked nice but it's cost was not probably that expensive.  My father had a 299 watch which if I remember it was a Bulova. A really nice watch but that was 30 years ago.

So is USBC saving any money????   Probably not that much.  Seeing that they probably get a bulk discount on everything you can decide.  The big deal is the perception from people like the NCAA.
