No bad bowling balls
« on: October 14, 2007, 02:35:36 PM »
Do you think there is such a thing as a bad bowling ball? We are all guilty of it it states it in my profile I don't match with Storm and Ebonite yet I watch people use them and be successful.

Do you think there is such a thing as a bad bowling ball?

Ebonite Tombstone comes to mind as a bad bowling ball. But other then a very few exceptions I don't think there is a such thing as a bad ball.

to answer your question.....no, there are no bad balls. if you do a search, over the years you'll find hundreds of topics of "name your favorite ball" and "name the ball you hated the most" and you'll see the same ball name on each list. different strokes for different folks, its all about matching up.

flop for me was the monster slay/r.  Got a friend who has four of them and loves them, but didn't match up for me on any condition or with any surface on it.

Like the other guys said, no matter which ball it is, SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE, will love it.

Well, IMHO it depends on what you'd call bad? It could be performance-wise, quality-wise or match-up-wise for the broad masses?

Production-wise, the 1st batches of Paradigms and Passions as well as the EPX-T1 come to my mind. For themselves, not bad balls, but the product quality killed the potential good performance impression.

The Radical Inferno is IMHO another "bad" ball, since the OOB finish only matched up for few players and therefore caused much disappointment - even though some changes of the finish would make it a pretty good ball, but for less oil than advertised (another winner in the "bad" category).

Basically, I think that "bad balls" hardly exist. It is mainly a match-up problem, of ball strength, surface and drilling for the player style, and maybe some very high expectations that the product in reality (or through inproper use) could not meet. There are always at least 2 sides to the medal

From personal experience I can tell, that I do not match up well with very low RG cores/balls, regardless of the manufacturer - and promptly I have troubles with my Awesome Finish. But I would not call the ball "bad" - it is an impressive piece, and through surface changes I was able to overcome some of the troubles I faced with the ball.

I would say that there is not a bad bowling ball, just bad match-ups. Wether it be a match-up between the bowler-ball, ball-drilling or the ball-lane, it all comes down to matching up.

Personally I do not match-up well with Ebonite. I have owned balls from other companies, most recently it was the Special Agent, that did not work well for my style.

But I do not think there is a bad ball, only bad match-ups.

And of any Storm ball I hear and see more people bowl well with Special Agents than any other Storm ball....so that is comical.

Ball companies simply aren't going to release a bad ball.  They do a considerable amount of testing to make sure they're putting out equipment that works on its intended condition for most people.  If there are enough cracking or quality issues to make it "bad", they'll fix them first (not to say that such things don't happen later too).  If it's real condition specific in the box finish, most of the time they'll change the box finish to make it more versatile.  If it's a lifespan issue, they'll ensure that the reaction and carry it gets is so astounding that people won't mind buying two or three in a season.

It just doesn't make sense to release bad balls.  Every now and then something will slip through.  Something will look great in testing but just doesn't seem to match up with enough real users.  The Blazing Inferno was kinda like that.  For an Inferno-line ball, people either loved it or hated it.  You'd be hard-pressed to find four people that didn't like the OI but the BI was just love/hate.  Not coincidentally, it wasn't out for very long either.

I believe the Intense Inferno was similar.

Also some super low rg balls are love hate.  Like the Action!

Then there are balls that almost everyone loved!  My buddy said (and he was not a Brunswick fan per se).  That he could almost not drill a bad Demolition zone no matter what he did!

People almost always LOVED them!

There are no balls that are absolutely bad. All bowling balls will work for something, if not you, then the guy next to you.

I have to agree with this, but only with the box condition with the heavy amount of polish Brunswick uses. Bringing the coverstock down and polishing it up though it is a much different and better ball.

By and large, there are no bad bowling balls(ie nobody liked it), especially in recent years, just bad matchups. One of the few I personally never heard of anyone liking on any condition, was the Columbia ProHook & ProHook Extreme(AKA NoHook & NoHook Extreme).
