MoRich Guru's ....Opinions please!!
« on: September 16, 2005, 12:19:03 AM »
Hey...see my profile....due to only one league this year...I've taken my arsenal to (drumroll) .... 2 balls!! my two faithful Hercules !!!

Anyhow.....Control drill Herc (Herc2)is at 1000 smooth and is perfect for our shot...walks in ....smooth, controllable..hits like....well....like a Mo ball!
anyhow.....the other Herc (Herc1)was originally at 800 compound but I've only cleaned it and haven't done a 're-scuff' ...so it's probably more like an 800-1000 medium polish now ...and when Herc2 starts to go too much (it's tough to move too deep w/ that ball because it's a control drill so sometimes it won't quite 'turn the corner as needed') I'll pull out Herc1 w/ a slight move left.

This seems to work 99% of the time...but last night I saw something that I've been considering......

Should I / could I ...consider getting a Sahara ...drilled similarly to Herc2 (control) but w/ a stronger pin position...this way...I can stay in the track and let her rip.  This will give me more versatility w/ this ball....and more options for when the lanes are a little different ...and/or for tourney's and/or leagues I'll sub in.

Freshen up Herc1 with a nice new compound 800....so I'll have 2 balls to choose from to start....and w/ the Sahara...I'd have 2 balls to chose from when Herc2 starts to be too much......

THOUGHTS !??!   I've inquired to King of the mill.......but I'd like to see if you guys had any thoughts........thanks !!!!

Hey Jeff,

I hate changing the ball surface when I know 9 times out of 10 it works on a certain condition. But I always change balls before I change lines, because I don’t like trying to find a new line when I know a certain ball will keep me in play.

Right now I’ve found the perfect one-two punch; Total Shock & Awe and Sahara. I get about 1 game with the TSA, but it’s enough to create my own look on the lanes.

I would recommend getting a Sahara; I love mine! The Sahara hates any oil, skids like crazy but it doesn’t over-react in the dry.

I would recommend drilling it 4 X 5 ½ mb with the pin about 3” above your midline. It’s a flip drill. One of my league’s there are normally 9 righties (5 man teams) on it, so my line dries up quickly. The other is a PBA shot, so I haven’t really used the Sahara much on it yet. I like how it let’s me play either to the right of the track or straighter up the lane, just a nice smooth arc.

Sounds like a tamer version of my Hercs......this just might make sense!

See my review for the Sahara.  It's drilled similar to what you are talking about, but it should explain everything in the review.

thanks DP, but actually, I was thinking of drilling it like Herc2, which is a control drill w/ a slightly stronger pin placement on the Sahara....so I'm not sure I can compare,...also because I don't have the hand you do...

I don't have much hand either. I like that get extra length with the pin placement/coverstock, but I know it's coming back smoothly and never jumpy. I try and let the ball do the work.

This sounds like Ultra Sonic territory, i know you also like Roto-grip so i thought would suggest it also. Great ball that works wonders when heads are getting crispy, i would say 4 1/2 x 5 and your set. Plus ball is 50 bucks or more cheaper and will do the same thing as you know from already using Roto-grip products.

True! Thanks.....The only argument I have here...is that my driller will have a much easier time 'fine tuning' the reaction I want because of the core in this ball, which is better for 'more' options in the long run. I'm not looking for a totally dry lane ball here....it's just an easy move when the Herc2 starts going too fast and Herc1 isnt' turning the corner from deeper yet and too strong from the original line........ I can stay on my orginal line w/ the Sahara...

While the Ultra Sonic is a great ball,...I had one.....and does fit this situation...I'll more overall options w/ the Sahara.....

I'm kind of dealing with the same issue at my house Jeff.  I can use my TA for 3 games if noone else is playing my line, but if it gets crowded, she gets pretty toasty in a hurry...I was also thinking of picking up a Sahara or an S&A, but didn't want to drill them to be flippy -- I'm liking the controlled move of my TA.....

Sahara!!  Same core w/ some density tweaks....that's what I'm looking for too....that basic core is best for me....TA, Herc...Onslaught, Ravage, Sahara...etc...

Hey Jeff,
I'm kinda curious as to why you want to put a stronger drill on the sahara. I know the coverstock leads one to put a strong drill on it.....but I think you will find that the motor in this bad boy will rule the day!

With my S&A, the pearlized coverstock gave up plenty of length, but the core flat out overpowers it on the backend, thus you get the serious skid/flip monster! I read what jjweb said about laying it out 4x5.5mb, but to me,  with medium revs that still ends up very skid/flippy.

I believe, if you really want a stronger drill, you should invert those numbers and go 5.5x4mb. At least this way you get the early and continuous read on the lane.....and...no surprises on the backend. Just strong arc, especially in the track. The coverstock will give you plenty of length.
Just a thought, based on my experience with both my Herc and S&A.
Some days you're the bug....some days you're the windshield...that's bowling!

Amazingly with the layout on my Sahara it isn't the least bit snappy. The coverstock naturally gives length, factor in the pin position and it's polished surface.

What works for me, may not for you.

Jesse,

I'm looking for a modified control drill....king has told me about it...you just put the pin in a slightly stronger position but the MB in a control spot...so instead of 2 1/4 inch pin to pap....you do 2 3/4....nothing major...just to give it a little more for the back...still smooth....but it'll have just enough kick!

We'll see....

Stubby! NO!!! beleive it or not...that's not true !! LOL

But I'm not looking for a 'dry' lane ball....just looking for something to come after the Herc....
