Awesome Finish and Over/Under
« on: September 24, 2007, 01:48:03 PM »
So I have an Awesome Finish, and I am fighting with the over/under so badly.  Any suggestions?  Maybe knock the polish off with a scotch brite or something?  I don't know what else to do, because as of now I am highly dissapointed.

Did you drill it to have more of a flippy rather than arc-like reaction?
Are the lanes wet/dry?

Your profile doesn't have any release/deleivery specs; so I can't make any guess about the your delivery or the appropriateness of the drilling.

The ball does come highly polished for use on medium oil patterns. Roughing up the surface by hand with a grey or a green nylon pad will certainly make it roll earlier and help handle wet/dry conditions. DO NOT DULL the entire ball. just remove SOME of the shine; let some of the shine come thru. It's easier to take it half way and test it rather than rough up the entire ball and find it grabs the lanes too early.

The drill is somewhat inbetween the huge flip and control drill as listed on the MoRich drill form.  The lanes we bowl on are hard to define.  They are wood, and the shot is strange.  With my Black Widow with a super control drill, the ball takes off early.  To get to the hole I must play super deep and get the ball breaking inside the 5 board.  I have trouble consistently getting the ball out that far.

So I figured the AF would be the answer, but if I move right (I'm a lefty) the ball hangs, if I move left, the ball jumps.  Yet if I miss left, the ball is long gone.

I'm inbetween a stroker and a tweener.  I just thought if I hit the polish off the ball, maybe it will give me a little more movement and allow me to move to my comfort zone.

Same problem here - I get very good length out of it, but with polish the ball lacks some control in the back end for me. Took it to 4.000 Abralon, and this was a huge improvement, even though the ball would read the lane much earlier and come closer to my S&A in reaction and need for oil. Durrently I am experimenting with a 3M rubbing compound finish that leaves a high gloss surface without polish, results pending.

Anyway, taking off the OOB shine is the best you can do/try. Maybe hitting the ball with Rough Buff will also do the trick - but once the surface is "opened", I think the PK18 solid will read the lane very well and early. Combined with the low RG of the core, the tuning margin between these factors is pretty narrow. Well, it's high performance - there's always a price to pay

I'm also attempting to tweak the cover of my AFi. Currently it's at 400 grit plus Rough Buff. I don't have enough games with this surface to form a full opinion but my intial impression is good.

My AFinish OOB was going a little too long so I hit it with a 4000 grit Abralon pad and that did the trick.  The pad took just enough of the shine off of it.  Still has plenty of length but the move to the pocket improved a lot.  OOB the ball seemed to struggle to make the move.  I also tried it at 2000 Abralon and the ball got a lot more of a midlane reaction which I did not need because I have an ARev(1000 Abralon) and an AHook(500 Abralon) for heavier oil.  If 4000 Abralon is too much surface try Brunswick's Rough Buff on it.

Well, I've been away but some people have already made some decent suggestions.

All I can say is manipulate the cover, as they and I have suggested or develop some change of release specs towards a more end-over-end roll, away from tilt and/or rotation. That is, decrease tilt AND rotation or find that sensitive area between hitting the dry too early or too late.
