Awesome Hook -UPDATED!!!
« on: March 11, 2007, 01:50:02 PM »
I picked up an Awesome Hook for a buddy, that I now own, lol. Anyway, what type of reaction does the pin right of ring, cg in the palm produce? I'm getting the thumb work done now, so I haven't got to throw it yet.

He said it really didn't hook much, and hit reall soft. The surface is about 500 or 600 grit. Is it burning up too early? Is it rolling out? The shot he used it on was a THS.

Any input would be great.

More than likely it was burning up a bit. The Awesome Hook.....HOOKS and requires alot of oil unless the bowler is extremely speed dominant.

You mention pin location and cg location....where is the PSA(MB) located?

Generically the pin location you mentioned is strong...but do not forget where the pin is in relation to YOUR PAP will determine the strength of the placement of the pin and mb.

I throw the ball considerably harder than my buddy, will that help it some? I'm hoping to give this a run tomorrow night, and see what happens.

If the ball is burning up, shouldn't it still hook, but hit dead? Or if the oil isn't there, the hooking action isn't either?

A ball that is "burning up" can do so in a couple of different ways.....but you almost always watch it hit the dry and straighten out.

Here's an update on my story:

My buddy read that the Awesome Hook is the "most hooking/strongest ball", lmao, so he wanted me to find him a used one. So, I did, and he didn't like it. It didn't want to finish for him, and didn't hit well. He said he'd trade me for a ball I had, so I said what the Hell I always want to try something different. First, I put the Awesome Hook in the dishwasher, to remove whatever oil it had sucked up from the previous owner. Then took it down to 600 grit, and was ready to go. It's pin right of ring, cg right of center line of grip.

I got to use it last night for the first time on a fresh house shot. I figured it'd be too strong, but I was going to use it until I paid for the "big split". All I can say is WOW! I stood way left, threw across the middle way out to the right, and back it came. I have NEVER had a ball this strong. My SCB is close in reaction, but still not as strong. The AH does need some oil for sure. Our THS is not enough oil to really use this, but I shot 208-212, but had to put it away half way through the 2nd game (tired of throwing hard as I could .  If the speed wasn't kept up, or if it hit too much dry outside, it would burn up for sure.

Sorry it's long, just wanted to give a mini-review/feedback on this thing. I can't wait to give it a shot on some true heavy oil. It's my first Mo ball, so guess it'll find a place with my Saws and Hammers.

Yeah, the Awesome Hook is a pretty good ball, very aggressive. I had to take mine up to a higher grit right off the bat because the OOB surface was burning way too early.

My only beef with the AH was that it wasn't different enough from my slightly shined Total Shock & Awe, which was just slightly sooner and just as strong on the backend. I simply didn't have a spot in the bag for both, at least not with those surfaces.

But if you are looking for a hard hooking ball for heavier patterns, the Awesome Hook can definitely fit that slot.

Yeah, it's a beast for sure. I'd like to pick up another Morich ball to compliment it, but time will tell.
