Got my new Awesome Finish (my first MoRich) today...
« on: February 07, 2008, 04:46:40 PM »
Still haven't decided how I want to drill this thing yet. I'll be drilling it myself (just started that) and I want to do it right the first time.

Anyway, just as an observation, I've now seen about a dozen of these balls in person and no two look anything alike. Mine is purple, navy and just a little bit of orange. No yellow. There's some kind of Exorcist-pea-soup green swirl around some of the red, too. Still, it's a neat looking piece.

I'm going to try to drill it in a way that I can get some length, but not so long as to kill the reaction. I just don't need it hooking at my feet or anything close to it. I want it to get down the lane, and when it starts going, I want it to be a fairly predictable -- but deliberate -- move left. No skid/snap.

Jess

Be careful with the setup - from my experience, the OOB AF goes VERY long, and then the core kicks in dramatically for a snappy and violent turn (mine is about 4.5" from PAP, MB stacked).

By the way a pretty even-colored specimen with base purple and orange and yellow flames, chopper style

Thanks for all the input. I used Mo's dual-angle instructions and came up with a 50/4/50 drill that sounded like something I'd like. I laid it out and when I was done, it pretty much resembles the drill pattern I typically use on much of my stuff. We'll see how it works later this week.

I found my AFi with my flippy drilling and the OOb surface very itchy at first. But the PK18 reacts well to surface changes, so, if you face reaction problems after drilling it up, just work a little on the cover.
4.000 Abralon improved control on mine considerably, but made it pretty close to my S&A with a similar setup. So I hit it with 3M Finesse-It compound, and with this glossy but non-polished surface I got the length I had been looking for plus much better control at the breakpoint. Since then, great ball!

For me, I got the best ball reaction taking it directly from OOB to 4000 Abralon with no polish or compound.  Ball still has some shine but any polish or compound on it makes it squirty and it will not finish.  At 2000 Abralon it got started too early reacted like my Awesome Revs but would not carry as well as the Revs.  For me the Finish is best on medium oil at 4000 Abralon.(Ball is drilled as per Morich for high track player/sharp break point.  Not sure how that converts to dual angle layout.)

This is how my AF is drilled up. I wanted something that gets a litle farther down lane then my No Mercy Beatn but I also wanted it to snap harder as well. This layout does exactly what i wanted. Not bad for my 1st ever layout and drilling I think.

Pin is in the ring finger, cg half inch negative, mb roughly 4" from the thumb.

OOps, sorry, I am late, the time zones are confusing sometimes... I put the Finesse-It on 4.000 Abralon, since it is intended to even out sanding lines of this "size". I do not think that it works directly on a polished surface.

The result was and is astonishing: a mirror-like surface which looks polished, but is not, and which is very tacky. It also seems to be quite durable, the ball has not tracked out much since I apllied it some months ago, and the AFi has been in frequent use since then. The finish is a nice compromise between a high gloss polished ball and high grit sanded, easy length through the heads but simply a better grip at the break point, at least for me on the AFi.

At 4.000, the ball would read the lane too early for me. It worked well, but was too close to some other balls, and the Finesse-It stuff was just the ticket to get more length out of it without sacrificing the good control I had at 4.000 Abralon. Risky experiment, but it was just the right assumption
