Arsenal Help
« on: November 29, 2006, 01:17:52 AM »
Hi. I am looking for some suggestions on building an arsenal for tournaments.  I bowl mostly in tournaments which use tougher conditions, such as PBA oil patterns.  I currently have the following equipment.  My bowler specs are also below.

I am mostly using MoRich and Brunswick right now.  What reactions am I missing for my arsenal?  What equipment would you suggest?  I appreciate any help you can give.

Awesome Hook - 4.5" pin to PAP, 65 degree layout, pin 2.25" above midline
Strike Zone - 4.5" pin to PAP, 70 degree layout, pin 3.75" above midline
Vapor Zone - 4.5" pin to PAP, 65 degree layout, pin 3.5" above midline
TS&A - 2 3/4" pin to PAP, 65 degree layout, pin 2.25" above midline
Arsenal Reactive - Medium arc type layout and reaction

Ball speed: 16-17mph
Axis Rotation: 75 degrees
Axis Tilt: ~17 degrees
Revs: Low end of medium revs

Thanks
Chuck

Looks like you have medium oil to a flood covered. You need something for dry/light and something for medium/light. A Sahara and a Groove Dry R would fill it out. Do you feel that you have overlap in your arsenal the way it is now?

Thanks for the reply.  It's funny, those are the exact two balls I have been considering lately.  I do feel like there is overlap in my arsenal.

The Awesome Hook is great for heavy oil, when I need a strong arc reaction.  The Strike Zone is good for heavy and medium/heavy, where I need a harder backend reaction (not quite flip).  The Vapor Zone is good for medium and medium/heavy, and is less angular than the Strike Zone (believe it or not).

On a house condition I can almost play the same line with the Vapor Zone and the Strike Zone.  The Awesome Hook gives me a different look because of the 500 grit OOB surface.

Thanks
Chuck

An awesome flip would work in there also. It will handle the mediums with a different shape than the arsenal reactive

I'd be careful with the sahara.  I have a seek and destroy drilled aggressive and taken down to 500 grit and it's only about 5 boards stronger than my sahara.  I have to say I honestly don't consider the sahara a dry lane ball, it's a medium ball for sure.

At least that's been my experience.  I tried getting it so I can keep an outside line when it gets dry but this snaps almost as much as my S&D.  If you need a medium ball, go for it, if not, then the Dry/R that was recommended is a great suggestion.  Don't underestimate the Power Groove Series, they hit really well!

Hope this helps.

Its not the amount of hook that decides if something is a dry lane peice or not. It is the energy retention. Yes the Sahara will hook and it probally hooks that much because it is so clean through the heads. I do agree that the sahara is not a dry lane ball by any means but, it would be a decent step under the Vapor Zones rough buffed coverstock. The Dry R is a great idea under the sahara IMO.

Chuck,

Couple of questions?

How big an arsenal do you want to go with?
What are the surfaces on what you currently have?

If most of what you have is box, have you considered a Weapon of Mass Bias?

It's the smoothest of the current lineup and drilled accordingly hooks on anything, even when the Hook and TS&A may roll out or be unpredictable.  It's pretty decent on sport patterns, from my experience and watching other ball reactions.  It'd be a very good goto ball to have in your bag.

Other than that I'd agree with the Sahara and Dry/R, as possible fillers...
