Got my S&A ......No.2 drilled today
« on: July 15, 2005, 12:48:48 PM »
So far so good. I tried following Mo's drill sheet when I had the first one drilled. Can't go by those diagrams. Ball was wayyy too strong. Very over under. Surprisingly, I could use it on a fresh shot, or a heavy medium shot, but after that put it up. I was only able to use one release with that ball also...up the back. But enuff of that.

I'm here to talk about No. 2. A sweet piece if I've ever had one! This ball has the pin directly under my ring finger and the mass bias, just under and in the middle of my thumbhole. This ball is plain awesome. Purposely waited till after league play, so I could test the length and stength of the pearl cover. Absolutely beautiful. I literally could not miss the pocket! I used four different releases....and this ball came back to the pocket like a bee to honey, or at least like it had built-in GPS!! The more I revved it...the more apt I was to get ten-pins. The more I stroked it.....ooooweee sweet string music was playin'. This is gonna be a piece I may be able to use all day.

I was standing 20 playing 13 at the arrows, sometimes out 10, sometimes out to 3....whatever....it always came back. Speed was about 14.8 first 4 frames, then got it to 15.5 the rest of my practice session. This ball with this drill goes long but comes back real strong. Can't wait to try it on a quantity of oil. Shot 214 and 217, but really wasn't paying attention to score. I was watching ball reaction at the breakpoint, more than anything else. Cleared the fried heads with eease.

Playing with it down and in, forced me to raise my speed to 16.5, or 17mph. Can't wait for league play. Will review it again at that time.

I noticed the same thing with my Ravage II...with the same drilling it hates to be hit. The more that ball is rolled, the better it likes it. If I grab a handful the ball will stone 10's all day.

I am contemplating drilling another S&A but I think I'll go with an H2O first since it's going to be a pin over the bridge type ball...Mo doesn't like pin over drillings with the Vanguard balls. Allegedly they are too over/under and very sensitive to release and speed.

Thanks Doug,

That's good to know. My first S&A was drilled with the pin about an inch over the ring, and about .75 of an inch right of ring! This ball had mass bias kicked way out! It was extremely strong....darn near uncontrollable. Time for a re-drill.

I redrilled my S&A with the pin directly over the bridge. It was very over/under UNTIL I polished the cover just enough to handle the oil AND I reduced my rotation (using more end-over-end, maybe 30 degrees or so, vs my normal 45-60 degrees). Then I got a reaction half way between hook and set and forward roll backend; then it started kicking out 4 pins. Wish I had set the pin-PAP distance to 3.5-4".

The Activator+ cover is very strong. Considering it's supposed to be a resin pearl, it acts more like a strong resin solid. In stock cover, it handles heavy mediums to medium-heavy oil patterns.

My first S&A, with that early roll drill, was very over/under....but surprisingly, it could be used in medium-hvy to hvy oil. I guess the  oil tamed it down some. But I was dissatisfied with a condition specific ball...and I could ONLY use an up-the-back of the ball release!
