Mo's best benchmark ball?
« on: October 03, 2005, 02:08:12 AM »
Hey everyone,

I'm just wondering what you all think Mo's best all-around, benchmark type of ball is. I'm basically looking for the best medium condition ball, preferably a solid as I already have too many pearls. What do you guys/gals think?

I know you said you'd want solid, but I would have to suggest an Onslaught. This ball rolls like a champ, and is just a bit stronger at the break than my Wired. Of course I have my Wired drilled to roll a bit earlier (cause it's my benchmark), but I could easily use the Onslaught in that spot.

Gene, ...

Medium......well, as you know you can drill Mo's stuff for just about anything....but....if it were me asking the ??.....I'd get a Ravage and put a semi-strong drill on it.....go up or down from there!

Also,...take the polish off...go for something like 1000 smooth....

Thanks guys. Jeff, I was thinking of such a thing with the Ravage. I know I really liked the shot shape that ball seems to give. I'll have to look into one. Hey, how would you compare the S&A to an Absolute Inferno? How would the shot shapes of the two stack up to one another?

Drilled the same w/ the same surface....you'll cover more boards with the SA...not too many, but more.....bigger break point/harder w/ the SA ....the AI will be smoother over all...

That's what I figured. I love my Total S&A so much that I was wondering if I'd have a spot in the bag for the pearl. I love my Absolute, however, so I really don't think there's a need for both.

No...not unless you're bowling a TON and need 2 differnet looking breakpoints w/ that type ball........

Gene,

To this day, I still think the Labyrinth is one of the most underrated balls of all time. When things get ugly, this old pro saves me. It is not a big hook ball, and it is certainly not dazzling. What ts does is read the lane and hit solidly, regardless of condition. It comes matte, but is easily polished and returned to original state to fit the situation. I have had the Minotuar as well, but the Laryrinth covers most conditions.

Gene,

In this day and age of very specialized resin formulations, one can no longer say they want a solid resin or they don't want a pearl. It is an ill-conceived theory that is no longer applicable. To give you an example that disproves it easily: take the Ravage, a solid resin, in fact, the very strong Brunswick PK 18 coverstock. Then take the Shock And Awe. It uses the even stronger Activator+ coverstock. The S&A is a stronger ball, by design, than the Ravage. Even sanded the S&A remains a ball for more oil than the Ravage.

To be 100% up front with you, I am not sure of the %-age effect that the S&A's core has in its performance over the Ravage and its core. I alos know that the Activator+ coverstock is stronger overall than the PK 18 cover. Brunswick's reps say that the PK 18 cover is stronger than the original Activator cover.

FWIW
I think that a polished S&A has the potential to make a very good control ball. Note my phraseology of the above sentence and I speak from a small degree of experience.

I think the Ravage may also; but I have no personal experience, beyond what I have seen, with that ball.

I would have said the Hercules due to its roll and predictability.  Right now, the Total Annihilation is a great ball.  Ravage is not close behind.

I've found the WMB to play all sorts of conditions very well at the proper surface.  Mine has a very light coat of clean n sheen on it drilled with the pin 4" to the PAP, MB 4 3/4 to the PAP, pin 3" above the midline, target weighted to 1/2oz positive.  I haven't found anything yet that this ball isn't playable on.  Sure, there might be some better choices in my bag for certain conditions but the WMB is one of the most versatile pieces I've thrown from Mo.

I would have to say the Total Annihilation.  I find that ball does not snap, but rather make a smooth arc to the pocket.  If you drill it with a control layout, then it will make a really good benchmark ball.

My arsenal:
1.TA or Rev Annihilation(overseas)-same ball drilled differently.
2.Ravage III(overseas)-(Super Hybrid Coverstock)when lanes begin to break down.

Pending conditions-I threw my Ravage III in league and shot 225, 289, 236 for 750. Picked up my Ravage III on ebay...14lb ball...I throw 15 and 16 balls and this 14 lb Ravage III hits like a 16 pounder.!!!!
