Awesome Hook or Awesome Revs for Oil
« on: December 12, 2006, 01:41:20 AM »
I am looking to get either the Awesome Hook or Awesome Revs for Heavy amounts of oil.  I have too much skid/snappy stuff for oil right now and just need a good overall hooking ball for oil.  MY PAP is 5 inches by 3/4 up.  My ball speed is around 16.5 mph and I generate quite a few revs on the ball.  I have really never tried a MoRich ball, but now Brunswick is making them I am all for it.  If the regular Morich contingent (Slopsurprise,Clint, etc.) could help me out that would be great.  I am mainly looking for a ball for the heavy oil volume patterns at the National Amateur Team USA Trials.  Thanks

Between the 2 listed, the Hook will be sooner (dull aggressive 500 grit cover) vs the pearl particle of the Revs...

Dull and more grit will pick up a roll quicker and create more friction........

The Hook will be earlier and while it makes a hard continous turn on the breakpoint, will be smoother than the Revs based on the fact the Revs is a pearl, albeit Particle Pearl.  This is based on box finishes only.  I have found the Hook to be extremely strong, almost too strong to throw in box (500).  Given your amount of hand, and the fact you have skid/snap stuff already, I'd do a Hook, but at 1000 abralon.  Unless it's a supreme flood, at which point I'd leave it at box.
The Revs would give you more versatility, but the Hook is THE choice for oil.

Hope this helps,

Bill

Thanks for the suggestions to this point.  I was definitly leaning towards the Hook, but also wanted to inquire about the Revs.  I just wanted to make sure that the Hook wouldnt burn up to quickly and have nothing left as far as backend is concerned.  Thanks again

I have taken the Awesome Revs down to 500 grit (like the Hook) and tried it.  Between the pearl particle and the stronger asymmetry, I think the Revs can handle just as much oil as the Hook.

I would agree that the Revs in the same finish as the Hook will cross as many boards as the Hook if not more.  Talking with Mo--he says if you have them with the same finish--the Revs will be 5 and 2 stronger than the Hook.  If you are looking for and oiler that isn't 'over jumpy'-then I would say the Hook also.

you'll need BOTH....

the "heads" break down....you'll start w/the hook...and then switch to the revs later in block...

promise you that!

Mo has about 4-5 good choices for the heavy stuff.

The Awsome hook,
The Awsome revs,
Total Shock and awe,
Weapon of mass bias,
Seek and destroy.

I have thrown them all with the exception of the Weapon of Mass but, I have seen them thrown so I know what they are about. To me, the most versatile and best all around on oil is the Seek and destroy. The Revs is good but, in OOB it is a medium/heavy ball. I had a Hook and it didnt match up with me but, that may have been the drilling but, I still dont think it would have matched up for me as well as the Seek with a better layout. The Total and WMB are very early and they would be good on serious oil conditions (flood) in OOB. On reason the seek matches me well is it can get angular (still controlled though). The game I like to play calls for me to belly the ball on most patterns. The Seek has the backend to recover and carry the 10 pin for my game where the other dont turn the corner as well. I have a Seek and under that is a revs and they are a GREAT 1-2 punch.

I am a fan of the Seek & Destroy for oil... but I am a particle lover. My AH is drilled to arc. In OOB, it was a turd... used a wet 1000 abralon pad and took the surface up quite a bit. I LOVE it on medium-heavy when there is a track to bump.

If the S&D and AH drill patterns I used were flipped... I might be saying the opposite.

Mo also said that the blue dye in the ball helps create friction!!

I don't know, the current website makes it look like the Total Shock and Awe hooks more?

I still don't get that as spec-wise they seem to be nearly identical.
--------------------
FS: Slate Blue Quantum 14.97#, 2.5oz Top Weight, Pin 2" to 3". Asking price is a NIB 15# BVP Mammoth with similar pin/top + $57 (covers drilling and shipping on the Mammoth for me), or $159, whichever is cheaper for you (both options include shipping the SBQ to you)

The TSA hooks earlier, alot earlier. Yes, the specs are similar but, they are 2 totally different balls. The lower flip cap vs. the dual caps make a world of difference even though the 2 balls seem to have nearly the same specs.
