I have an OnSlaught that I never really use anymore except when I am just messing around.

Would this be a good ball for my son to use on drier lanes? I know the ball is strong, but is it too strong for lanes that are dry?

Depends on your son's release and delivery.

If he has a strong release, sand it to 4000 grit and add a bunch of polish.
If he has a medium or weaker release, sand it to 1000 grit and polish it up.
Work your way from there.

When it came out it was for medium oil, I'd say. It was a polish particle pearl from Columbia, I believe. As such, it was for medium oil with a strong backend. Sanding it (with wet/dry sandpaper or Abralon) will smooth out the at-that-time softer Columbia particles.  Adding polish will allow it to be used on less than medium oil. Again, depending on your son's delivery strength and ball speed, you may need finer or rougher sanding and more or less polish.

If you wanted to use it as intended for medium oil, I'd suggest an oil extraction, then a sanding with a SB green (600 grit) nylon pad, then a light polishing.

As usual Charlest has given you the very best advice available.

I have a 15lb Onslaught, and this past season I used it more than at any other time that I've had this ball. Previously it just sat in my ball rack.

This ball for me has proven to be a godsend for use on some lighter mediums, and on transitioning drier, spotty lanes as well. The ball inherently has a big backend to it, so changing my release, to back off on the revs has been crucial to my success with this piece. Mine is drilled basic label lev drill.

This ball in box conditon gives you extra length.....hence the big backend, so it can recover sufficiently. It is now one of my favorite pieces. I was able to use mine on drier conditions. If your son knows how to adjust his speed accordingly, then this will be a good piece for him to own. Good luck!
