Onslaught vs. Shock and Awe
« on: June 20, 2006, 12:46:04 PM »
I have each of these on their way to me.  Not sure what the difference is between the two and how I should drill them to compliment each other.  Anyone throw both and have experience to tell me about?

The drillings are dependent on your pap and other stats ie ball speed, axis tilt, rpms, etc.  These are both strong asyms, with the S&A having the stronger asym core vanguard with the bottom flip block, and the Onslaught having a modified version of the core used on the ravage, Mayhem, and Sahara.

The S&A is a strong agressive pearl reactive basically Activator + as seen on the Absolute Inferno, Vapor Zone, and the Awesome Flip to name a few.  The Onslaught is a pearl particle that is fairly strong, as to what other balls use this cover, I don't know, but if I'm not mistaken the Onslaught was made when the covers were being produced by columbia.

I would expect that the Onslaught would have slightly less hook potential oob with the same drilling.  The S&A comes oob with rough buff, but to get this finish, try sanding with 500 and applying rough buff rather than the Brunswick recommended 220 and rb.  The Onslaught comes oob at high gloss.  The S&A should be a bit more angular with the same finish as it has no particle, but oob the polish should give the Onslaught the more angular reaction.  Overall the Onslaught should serve as a great ball for mediums where there is some wet dry that needs to be smoothed out.  The S&A is for a similar volume, but functions better when the shot is a bit more wide open.  If you want a difference in hook potential go with the Onslaught having a weak drill, 2 1/2 PAD or so and fine tune the breakpoint shape with the MB to get the reaction wanted.  Drill the S&A strong 4" PAD or so with the pin to mid less than the Onslaught.  If need be the S&A can be lengthened with polish.

A little long winded, but it should give a good start, pm me with further questions if you'd like.
