Title: pin and top weight selection

when selecting a ball how do u decide what pin and top weight u want.say i want a ball for heavy oila ball that will handle carry down and come back from the flooded out of bounds beyond 10 what pin and top weight do i select, i am thinking of getting a total s&a i have a wmb with a 4inch pin 3.5 top but it was a dissapointment can anyone help

I know when I had my WMB drilled I wanted a ball for heavy oil. So my driller selected a ball with low top weights and a short pin. When I asked why he stated that the low top weight with the short pin would allow the ball to read the lane sooner and get into more of a forward roll. He also moved the pin nearer my PAP to help achieve the desired roll.

I’ve got to say that the few times I’ve bowled with it. It worked like I wanted it too.

I would strongly suggest you talk it over with your driller and have him consult MoRich on the drill. I did and I am totally satisfied with all three of my MoRich balls (Ravage, S&A, and WMB).

Ahhh if you insist...

Pin length and top weight independently do not affect ball reaction. Some people do believe that top weight plays a small role in reaction, I believe it does not matter. What you will run into problems with is when you have a long pin, high top weight, and you want to put the pin, say, 1 1/2 inches above the midline below the bridge. You will have a lot of problems getting the ball back to legal. The same can be said when you have a short pin and you want to put the pin above the finger line or closer to your axis.

Short pins only tend to roll earlier because they require you to lay out the balls (more often then not) in a position that usually results in early roll. If you want to be safe, go ahead and ask for a 2-3 inch pin and 2.5-3 ounces of top. If you know for a fact that you want to place the pin near grip center, ask for a shorter pin. Otherwise, a 2-3 inch pin is pretty versatile.
