Question on which ball for oil
« on: October 30, 2006, 11:19:01 PM »
Hey fellow Mo throwers,

I am rounding out my arsenal, and I am finding that I am lacking a true heavy oil ball. Here is my arsenal:

Total Shock & Awe (polished)
Action (slightly polished)
Impulse Zone (drilled pin axis, good for wet heads w/ some carrydown)
The One
Eraser Blaze (good for drying heads w/ some carrydown)
Awesome Flip
Smokin' Inferno (White pin)
Tropical Storm
Scout Hi-Flare Urethane
Target Zone

While I realize that I have a few very strong balls on that list, I don't have any of them prepped for true soup. With that in mind, I'm in the market for a true heavy oil ball.

If I go with Mo, here's what I'm thinking: 1) Buy an Awesome Hook to take the medium-heavy spot currently filled by the Total Shock & Awe, and take the T S&A back surface back down to box finish. 2) Simply buy a second T S&A, keep it in box surface for the heavy stuff.

Which option do you think will yield the best results? I already know that I like the Total, so I guess it's just a question of whether or not the Awesome Hook is good enough to warrant picking one up to throw in there as well.

Just for your info, I'm a high speed semi cranker with a fairly high track, unless I'm purposely trying to add more tilt. If you need any more info from me, let me know. Otherwise, thanks in advance for your tips and suggestions!

Both balls are very good 'oilers.'  I think it more depends on how your eye perceives ball motion.  The AH will have a tendency to show a stronger move on the back part of the lane--the TSA will roll a little earlier with not as strong a move on the back.  Overall, the AH will cover more boards then the TSA.  I have drilled both balls for customers and they seem to like the AH a little better b/c they can 'see' the ball motion easier.  Either one would be a good choice for an 'oiler.'

Gene,

Mo would tell you himself that the TS&A will hook more on soup than the Awesome Hook.

in true soup, the TSA will hook more. but on the average shot the AH will, as more of its hook power is in the backend.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. Please keep them coming. As a note, I know that the Total Shock & Awe (in box finish) is the best choice for the soup. My question is whether or not I should pick up an Awesome Hook for the medium heavy spot beneath it and dull down my Total, or  should I just leave my polished total alone and pick up a second for soup alone. I guess it would've been better if I would've asked the question like this: which ball is better as a medium heavy ball with some backend punch, a polished Total Shock & Awe or a box finish Awesome Hook?

Awesome hook is designed to roll later than the TS&A I would just buy another TS&A rather than monkey with two bowling balls at once
