What a difference a surface adjustment makes!
« on: November 13, 2006, 01:41:33 PM »
Hey everyone,

Some of you may remember, I recently posted a thread entitled "Awesome Hook = Just OK?" The reason for that assessment was the fact that the ball, while powerful, did not seem to want to pick up and hook the way that it was advertised. I could get the ball to the hole, but I really had to feed it outside and force it to come home.

Well, before league tonight, I wanted to practice with it on our fresh league pattern. The first few balls yielded the same results I had seen before: the ball needed to be fed into the dry in order to hook and hit. Feeling that the a change was in order, I gave the ball a quick spin and hit it lightly with green scotchbrite. Man, what a difference!

From the first ball, I could see the change. The ball now picked up in the midlane before making a really hard circle toward the hole. Once it got there, forget about it! I used this ball for the first two games of league and went +103 (227, 276). I had the front 9 during the 276. I carried the world to get there. I was just a bit too forward out of the 10th ball, resulting in a 1/2 10-pin. I didn't like the look of the transition during the third game, so the AH went back into the bag.

However, I could not be more impressed with the change that the surface adjustment has brought out. Now, the Awesome Hook truly looks awesome. It reads the midlane like a champ and makes a very hard arc to the hole. The hit is typical Mo, hard and tight. Now let's just hope that the ball doesn't die out, as a few people have claimed it will. Just in case, I've made sure to wipe it off after each shot and to clean it on the spinner after every use. I don't want to take any chances; now that I've gotten the cover to the proper surface for my game, this ball looks too good!

P.S. I'm not familiar with the grit ratings of the different scotchbrite pads. By hitting the AH with the green one, did I rough the surface up or smooth it out? Whatever I did, it worked, but I'm just curious!

Gene.....thanks for posting your experience...some people do not realize still till today how important surface is...even with what may be the correct ball and drill, you still have to match surface...
