I ordered a 16 pound Shock and Awe off ebay for super cheap. I wanted to try a 16 pound ball and I like Morich so I figured I'd give it a shot. I got the ball today. On the box it says, 4-5.5 inch pin. Well, the pin is 5.5 inches. It is about 2-3 inches from the Mass Bias on the ball. The driller I took it too, was like, "well, we are going to have to get creative. The good thing is that the top weight is 1.2oz".
I'm not going to be able to get it drilled until Thursday, so if anyone here has some suggestions on how to drill the ball let me know. I usually like the pin just below my ring finger (righty), but I'm thinking that won't be possible with this ball...
-
No wonder it was soo cheap.
5.5 inch pin and 1.2 oz top.. Thats horrid.

That's awesome for any Ball Driller that knows what he/she's doing.

You're probably assuming that the Pin/cg/MB are in a straight line. It's easy to get a 5.5" pin out and a 2" cg to MB length if the cg is off the Pin/MB line by 1 1/2".

No matter what, the MB will always be marked at least 6 3/4 away from the pin, no matter where the C.G. is. Think about your visual for a second again. MB can't even be mismarked in Morich balls because there is an extra pin poured where the actual MB is.

Sorry, I meant the CG was that close to the Mass Bias. My mistake.

I have a Revs and a Finish that were "long pin specials." Perfect balls for asy flip drills.

Where did you put the CG and MB on yours?
-
The only thing that the cg matters for on that ball is whether or not you will need a weight hole. Your layout is controlled by the pin and mass bias. The low top weight will mean a smaller hole. your driller may have to drill the thumb deeper to help remove thumb weight
-
So, if I understand MB correctly (I may be wrong), the further right I put the MB of the 90 degree angle, the more skid/flip will occur? Do you want the MB anywhere near the line of your PAP?
-
Actually it's the other way. MB's towards the thumb hole tend to be flippier than ones toward the VAL. A pretty standard asym. flip drilling is stack the pin and MB 1.5 in. away from the VAL and target weight based on where the CG ends up. This will give a strong but sideways reaction given the characteristcs of the weight block/coverstock on the S&A.
-
Tell your ball driller to go to one of Mo's seminars. As previously stated the thumb may have to be drilled deeper or a weight hole can be added to take care of teh additional thumb weight that you will tend to get with a 5.5" pin. Ask your ball driller why this is a problem, and if he says anything like "you can't have negative side weight" take the ball to someone that knows what they are doing. Double drilling the thumb may also be an option.
-
Double drill the thumb if you have to. As in take it as deep as possible with a 2nd drill bit--go down a couple of sizes if you are putting a slug in. Might have to have a pin above the fingers, but this ball is very drillable.

My ball won't hook--Oops, it was my spare ball....
-
Thanks for the reply's and advice everyone. I'll go talk to the driller after work today. Thanks!

I'm failing to see how you need to get creative.
Pretty much anywhere on the ball with the CG will be legal, and under 1 ounce net weight after drilling.
You're guaranteed net bottom weight, thats the certainty.
No worries here.

Cool. So, one last thing I'll ask...
This could be a harsh subject, but if CG doesn't matter, then why does pin distance really matter? Or does CG only not matter when talking about rotating left to right away from the hand? Or did my head just explode trying to think about this? Yeah, its C, definitely C...
-
that's a ball with tastey specs if you want to go pin up, or put a pin higher up on the VAL. those would be easy to use for the right person.

Having certain pin lengths can make it easier to use certain layouts without needing to "get creative". If you want the pin above the fingers but only have a 1" pin, you can do it, but you'll have to drill the fingers deeper and maybe you don't want to do that. Maybe you don't want to have to use a weight hole, you want to see how you like the reaction before you add a hole, but the layout you've chosen with some pin length dictates that you'll need one. It's about the option to not use a weight hole or to place it where you like instead of placing it where the CG tells you to.

This is the exact reason why I order Asymmetrics with low tops, it just takes the CG restriction on drilling options right out of the equation.
I dont know why people wig out over low top, its actually a blessing unless you're looking for a certain size x-hole to drill.
-
Again, thanks for the info all. No wonder I come here all the time...

No, what I was assuming was the "it" in second sentence was the was the same "it" in first sentence - which was the "pin"

I finally got the ball drilled. Pin 3 3/8ths from PAP about 2 1/2 above midline to the right of ring finger. It looks something like this...
0 0 o
..........pap
0......cg
.....mb
It is a wicked reaction. I'm really liking the ball, it is extremely angular, which is what I was looking for.
The only thing that wasn't as good as advertised was the slogan, "It will Shock and Awe your opponents". My girlfriend kept looking at me like I was crazy when I constantly asked her if it shocked and awed her. Oh well...

Yeah, I was bowling against her. She was going after me, so when she was walking up to the ball return I'd ask her. She bowled a 186 once and beat me so she never lets me hear the end of it. This is just all part of the payback...
