Help Save My S&A !
« on: May 08, 2005, 12:01:39 AM »
I consider myself a beginner in bowling and have limited knowledge on ball drilling and technical issues.

My S&A was drilled in accordance with Morich’s sharp break point layout for low PAP player.  I am disappointed with the reaction that I get on this ball.  Before drilling the balance hole, the ball did provide some good hitting power.  Nonetheless, it fell short on the skip snap or sharp break point characteristic that I have anticipated.  The situation in fact got worse after punching the balance hole (I believe it is located approximately 1” to 1 ½” off the PAP, around ¾” in diameter and 1” to 2” deep).  The hitting power somehow mellowed down with the ball hooking far less than before.  I regret to say that my old and dying C300 Reaction Arc has relatively better backend reaction and hitting power than this new purchase.  Having applied a light coat of Track Clean ‘N Sheen, I found a slight improvement on hitting power but it still not achieving the sharp skip snap reaction that I want.

My questions are:  1) Would modifying the balance hole serve to improve the hitting power and lane reaction?  2) Is it worthwhile to try further polishing up the ball (say using Track Magic Shine)?  3) Is the balance hole being punched at a wrong location to start with?  If so, what should be done to remedy the disaster and how to do it properly?

I have read in this forum that some S&A owners use target weighting to figure out the balance hole location whereas the others simply said they bring the ball to zero size weight (balance hole location not mentioned) to improve the ball reaction.  By the way, my PAP is 4” with 0 up/down.  I have higher than average ball speed and high rotation.

I hope the Morich experts here could shed some light on this subject.  Thank you for reading!

1. I strongly suspect that a target weighted weight hole is the RIGHT thing to do.

2. Surface supercedes ALL other considerations. This ball is considerably stronger than many, myself included, suspected. I fault MoRich for failing to even hint at basic oil patterns for the box condition ball, but then it seems the S&A is being shipped with no particular box surface condition. People are finding anything and everything from dull to high goloss polish, according to the latest reports. I suspect you need a lot more polish than you now have on the ball.

3. MoRich balls always seem to respond to the basic strong reaction drilling, what Mo calls "Sharp Break point", given the bowler's correct PAP AND the correct surface for the oil pattern AND lane surface upon which the ball is used.

-------------------------------------------------------
I am personally getting closer to the expected ball reaction, given the drill I have on my S&A, the more polish I apply for my medium-light, wet/dry oil pattern and old wood lanes on which I bowl. I am currently up to a 1500 grit polish.

beanbag,

There are a couple of issues that you have to look at:

First, Clean n Sheen is not a polish it is a compound. Compound finishes tend to be smoother off of the breakpoint than polished finishes. SO yes, try the magic shine.

Second, if you consider yourself a beginner how consistant is your release? If you are not consistant in your release an asymmetrical ball was a bad idea. These balls are set up solely for the way you throw the ball and the reaction you want.

PS- target weighting is the way to go bud!

Thanks Charlest & Excaliber. I will try both target weighting and polishing with Magic Shine. Ex, I agree with your comment on release consistency. Initially, I had the same concern but after months of rigorous practice and testing, I am able to replicate the release with good consistency.

Thanks kotm.  I take your point on hi load particle vs. buffed resin. I have just tried throwing the S&A along side a Messenger Ti for the sake of comparison. I found the Messenger Ti has relatively more backend reaction and hits like a truck.  I have not done anything to my S&A yet but will try target weighting and playing with different surface. Hope I am on the right track.  Any more inputs?

Beanbag,

You have to decide what you want first and what you've got 2nd.
If both the Messenger ti (is it a pearl or the solid) and the Arc have more backend than the S&A, is this situation on the same oil pattern?
If so, then your Arc must have absorbed a lot of oil and is not nearly the oil handling monster it was when it was new.

The S&A has a very strong cover and while the Arc is made for oil, it is not a new ball so it may no longer be reacting the way it was when new. How much of an oiler it still is, for you, now, is a mystery to us? It's hard to describe properly in words.

The S&A should handle a lot more oil than any polished Messenger Ti. So, it's entirely possible that the S&A is burning itself up in the heads and midlane on the same oil pattern where the Messenger is getting good length and hooking at the backend. BUT this shold be the same condition for the Arc, which is alos a MUCH stronger ball than the Messenger. YOu should almost not be able to use the Arc on any oil pattern where the Messenger is working correctly.

The S&A, whether it has a stronger skid/snap reaction or not, should, theoretically, fit perfectly between an ARC and a Messenger in oil handling ability.

One last item: an S&A drilled for a sharp break point is also drilled for a strong overall hook, in fact, as far as I know, maximum hook. So, if the surface is not polished or even if it's not highly polished, it will go into a roll early and hard, especially if there isn't enough oil for it.

PS: if I said anything incorrectly, kotm will certainly correct me. Go by what he says.
