Someone talk me out of buying a S&A

There's one used at my pro shop, fully plugged, with about 3 games on it, and the shop is having a sale, starting tomorrow: used reactives for $50 (w/o thumb and grips). To me, this seems like an awesome deal, c'mon $50 should be a no brainer, right?

The thing is, I don't need any new balls. I have a 180 average in the league I'm in now, but am realistically more like a 165 bowler. I have timing issues (early with the ball) that I need to overcome, and the equipment I have works fine (I have a plastic spare ball, Black Hammer(these two stay at home), a B-wick Monster Smash/R, Ebonite Predator (probably going to get rid of soon), and a Colossus). So I have 5 balls right now. I've been told the drillings are fairly similar on the 3 pro/reactives. With my average, I refuse to carry more than 3 balls. I'm on a Med-Heavy THS, and am thinking I can open up the lanes, and have a ball that I can swing and have come back with a vengence, even with my stroker style.

I keep telling myself to practice more, and not to become an equipment dependent fluffer, but can I really walk away from this? Especially since I work at the alley and will probably get grips/thumb discounted. I love the Colossus that I have (original black) and have heard rave reviews about the S&A.

doubleraven: I say you've already answered your own question. You are better off spending $50 on a good lesson from a reputable USBC coach to work on early timing issues versus buying a good deal on a used bowling ball. A lot of people thing the latest ball will solve their scoring woes- when most of the time its down to the individual bowler and their technique that they need to refine.

Buy the ball, $50 you are never going to get a better deal than that.

Video tape yourself from the side and post the video, someone here will help with your timing, or email it to me directly.

How about you buy the ball for $50 right now, but wait to get it drilled.  This way you aren't throwing away a spectacular deal, but you also aren't going against your will and drilling another ball.

BUY THE BALL.. It will become your first ball out of your bag. Its a great ball and a much better overall ball than any of those you listed..

You can still practice, get lessons, whatever, but $50 for a shock and Awe is a great deal..

alright, i went over to the shop and bought it. its a good thing i did, because 3 other people tried to buy it after i said i would. i'm getting it punched up for me tomorrow by someone pretty familiar with the vanguard core, and can't wait to see it coming off my hand.

It is a good deal. The only thing that would worry me is that the MB is going to move slightly after the ball has been plugged. Does the shop drilling it have a determinator? If so, have them spin it to find the MB. The MB location is extremely important in determining the reaction the ball is going to give you.
Asymmetrical equipment needs extra attention when it is being set up. If you consider yourself a beginner, becareful! As your game advances so release may change and that could easily make the ball react differently as well.
