Grit of S&A and AF before polish?
« on: October 30, 2007, 02:22:38 AM »
On Morich's website, it shows that the S&A uses the Rough Buff polish, and the Awesome Finish uses the High Gloss finish, but it does not show what the balls are sanded to before applying the finish.  Does anyone happen to have this secretive information available?

Rough Buff base grit = 220
High Gloss base grit = 400

Nothing secret - it is Brunswick's factory finish.

For the Rough Buff ons a AFlip or S&A, use a 220 grit base, then apply Roughz Buff.

The Awesome Finish is a little tricky - theoretically, it is 400 grit base with Brunswick's High Gloss polish - but someone explained that it was, due to the production process in Mexico (that also applies to MoRich equipment), 220 grit base + Rough Buff + High Gloss polish. Both will IMHO lead to different reaction results. The latter should be a tad longer and tend to be more flippy than a "pure" High Gloss surface with a 400 grit base. Mine was very squirty and VERY long, and it became better (for my needs and game) when I resurfaced the ball and gave it a 2.000 Abralon base and then added HG polish.

Interesting.  Rough Buff then High Gloss.  I might try it and see what happens, then try the 400 + High Gloss.

Thanks for the info guys.

The Resurfacing page says that their current equipment uses one of the six standard Brunswick finishes, with the Awesome Finish having a High Gloss polish.

Yes, it says 400-grit plus HG but I'm inclined to agree with dizzy, it looks a helluva lot shinier than that.  I've seen several of the polished Brunswick balls and the finish on the Finish is more like a high-grit plus polish like The One than a low-grit plus polish.

The email Dizzy referred to was supposedly straight from the Morich tech staff.

My AFi was so shiny out of the box I could have shaved in it...lol

Some one posted this a couple of days ago - I did not find the original source, sorry for that, but after my experience with the OOB ball I would not deny this procedure - sound logical, after I had much reaction problems withz the ball. It showed no sanding lines at all, very even surface, but somehow did not react well at the breakpoint - different from what I'd expected from a PK18 ball.
