Update on Shock & Awe
« on: March 20, 2005, 09:47:29 AM »
WOW! This ball is just flat out amazing. I was practicing on a broken down THS, I could play just about anywhere with it. I've never been able to play the deep inside line, not a problem with this beast. This ball lives up to the hype and they weren't lying when they say "You can hear the difference". I have never seen a ball drive through the pocket as hard as it does, and the carry? Holy moly! Does this puppy throw pins around like rag dolls.

My WMB I'm a little disappointed with. I keep tracking within an 1/8" from the thumb hole; I have no clue why. I don't have this problem with anything else (including the Shock & Awe). The pin carry is not bad, but I know it's not living up to it's true potential.

I'm thinking of adding a weight hole to the WMB, might help with the track problem.

Any ideas with the WMB?

That could actually help with the track problem? I'm talking about the first oil ring being about 1/8" from the thumb, sometimes it even hits the thumb hole.

tracking that close to thumb hole is not going to hurt anything in my opinion. I alwasy track fairly close to the thumb hole and its never caused me any problems.

If they only made a ball that would carry that da_n 7 pin (and I am right handed!!)

My WMB is very user-friendly sanded at 1000 abralon.  Looking forward to a Shock & Awe

I sort of figured it was a combination of both, hitting the thumbhole and the surface. I had wet sanded it to 600, as i knew 500 would burn early, but I'll hit it with a grey pad and see if that does anything. When it does hit the thumbhole, it just stands up.

It does hook and hit, but I know this ball has some awesome potential. Actually, I  almost picked up the greek church with it. Sent two pins back on the deck, took 4 out of the 5. It does toss the pins.

I was watching someone throw an Absolute Inferno, drilled similar to my Shock & Awe. My Shock & Awe was an easy 8-10 boards stronger on the backend with a much sharper break and flip.

Hitting the thumbhole must have 'some' effect on pin carry and hook, right? It doesn't effect the WMB when it hits the thumb, but it kills the hook. I wonder why   it is hitting the thumbhole? My release hasn't changed, and I have had plenty of balls drilled with the pin near or lower than the WMB. Hmm, very interesting...

I'm afraid that if I try and change my axis tilt, I might start to spin it.

I know what you mean about sending the pins flying, and doesn't the sound of your strikes bring people over to see what is making that noise. I love my Shock and Awe to.

i roll the ball over the thumbhole for the first 20 feet on higher flare balls, and it can be worse for me with lower flare balls. Talking with my driller about it, He says it is due to "too much lift with not enough rotation fast enough to compensate." Even though I get plenty of axis rotation, he says that I do not come around the ball fast enough to compensate for the amount of lift I am getting on the ball.

I have pretty much stopped using low flare equipment. I only have 2 lower diff balls left and both of them have the pin high with lower weight hole placements. I have now eliminated the problem mostly, not like it was a huge problem, but if it isn't flaring away from the thumb by 30 feet or so, either the pin has a very weak placement (not the case), you don't have a lot of revs, or something else is making the ball not flare the amount it should.

This is something strange I realized. When I shoot cross-lane for a 7 or anything I would shoot cross-lane at, I have absolutely no problem with the track. In fact, I create a larger track.

Hmm, I'm stumped.

Probably not putting as many revs on the ball. I know my thumb thumps WORSE with my spare ball than with any other ball I have, but thats just me.

To throw the ball cross lane you naturally get your hand to the side more. Just watch anybody, it doesn't have to be a forced thing, its just that (for most ppl) the arm is goin across the body to some degree atleast and this gets you more on the side of the ball. I used to be all screwed up, I could throw my spares, didn't matter where with perfect form, but there was something about throwing strikes that I was spinning the ball some.  I was getting perfect tracking going right, and somehow i was compensating when I went left too, just couldn't go strait. My feeling is that you have a different release for spares. Now what I found was that I was to concerned with hitting my mark and TRYING to get as many revs as possible on the ball.  What I learned to do is simple: RELAX your hand as completely as possible. To remember this, just before you start your approach simply stretch your hand while in the ball. Take that pressure off of the thumb and fingers. Then fire away.  I have probably doubled my rotation if not more since i learned to relax and not try for rotation. It seems odd to let off pressure to get rotation but it works. Now everything I just said may not be anywhere near right for you, but give it a try and see if you don't get a better track.  It sounds to me that you have a tight grip on the fingers and are producing an end over end roll by holding them too long.  Thats just my thoughts and I have never seen you in action so I can't say for sure, but its my best guess. Good luck.

I'll have to try that, thanks. I do catch myself sometimes giving a death grip to the fingers, just to get that little extra rev.

I guess sometimes less is really more!
