Depending on drilling and surface condition, the Shock & Awe is for medium to medium-heavy oil while the Paradigm is for medium-light to medium oil with clean backends. The S&E is much more capable of many different looks on the lane, depending on bowler and drilling, while the Paradigm is basically a go long and flip/strong arc ball. The S&A can be just as strong at the backend, but handles(actually needs) more oil, and handles it more easily.
This was driven home to me last week when one of our better bowlers was trying out his new Paradigm, when he normally KILLS the lanes with his Shock & Awe. He was on the next pair, tearing his hair out trying to make the Paradigm work, when we had gotten medium+ oil amounts (not quite medium-heavy) and the Paradigm couldn't make the turn or carry. I asked Ned why he wasn't going back to the S&A; he said he was just trying to see what the Paradigm was capable of doing.
