The Octane, wow is the first thing I said when I threw this ball. If you are looking for a ball that is long and strong, the Octane is the one. The Quadfire core (2.55RG) and the all new hybrid Agility Skid Flip Xtreme cover (.043 diff) provide length and a smooth but strong transition to the backend.

My Octane is drilled 65X5X65 which put the pin below my ring finger and I have a low weight hole. The Octane is super clean through the front due to 5000 grit laser scan polished cover but provides plenty of traction when the ball sees the dry part of the lane. I have thrown the Octane mainly on THS and the pin down layout for me has allowed me to play down and in with amazing carry through the pins. I will be drilling another. I believe this ball will give me the recovery I need when I play deeper angles to the pocket in regionals.

In summary, the Octane is by far the strongest/fastest reacting MOTIV ball I have ever thrown. The Primal Rage will handle more oil but when it is too much, the Octane will fit nicely right behind it. The black and purple color combo is sharp looking also.

Octane - 40 X 4.5 X 45

Description: The Octane uses the same Quadfire core as the previous Thrash series and older QZ series, but with the brand new Agility SFX coverstock. The addition of the Octane has filled MOTIV’s slot for an angular, medium oil ball. Since the release of the Primal Rage MOTIV has released several pieces that have angular motions…Well the Octane provides plenty of length, continuation, and significantly more backend than previously releases.

Reaction: The Octane’s core/box cover combination is ideal for moderate to lighter volumes. I feel like I can stay very aggressive with the Octane and still maintain the shape downlane. On the easier conditions I have thrown on so far the ball really helps me open up my launch angles, I am one that usually keeps them very tight on most patterns. This ball is going to work on a lot of different patterns, especially if you hear what I have to say about the surface adjustment I made and watch the difference for yourself in my video. I personally found the Octane even better with the cover adjusted to 3K Abralon. After adjusting the surface to 3K I found that it allowed me to get further in on the pattern (Obviously) but also just as continuous making the ball overall just stronger. You can see in my video that the 3K cover on the Octane allowed me to get in even deeper than I was with the Primal Rage. I haven’t tested it with more surface than 3K, but I can only imagine that this ball can be thrown on some heavier patterns with surface and still open it up downlane.

Comparisons: I compared the Octane to 3 balls in my video, but I didn’t compare it to the Sigma Sting due to time restraints in the video, so let’s start there.  The Octane provided me with more length than the Sigma Sting, but also provided more backend.  Because of the more aggressive motion off of the friction I was actually required to play deeper, but the overall amount of hook they provide is very similar. Comparing the Octane to the Primal Rage I noticed that the Primal Rage forces me deeper due to the earlier core, but I’d also have to say that the new cover on the Octane makes it more angular than the Primal Rage.  Next, the Tribal required me to square up compared to the Octane, making the Tribal similar in length and but less angular downlane. Last, the Venom Shock was noticeably different. The Venom Shock started up much sooner and is much stronger midlane, with a very subtle change in direction downlane compared to the Octane.

Summary: This is truly an improvement once again to an existing core. This is an important ball for me as a power tweener. I often find myself not being able to get in as deep as the power players, but the shape of this piece helps me get closer, with the necessary length and more backend than I have ever seen in a ball.

Review:
The New Motiv Octane has a great balance of length and flip. It fills the need for a ball that is longer than the Rage but can turn the corner harder. The Octane for me, hooks slightly less than the Rage but more than the Apex.  The ball has great shelf appeal and the blend of purple, black and grey get a lot of attention. The Octane gets easy length through the front even as it is revving up. The combination of core and cover does not seem to have any over/under problems. The backend motion of the Octane allows it to create angle when it sees friction. The entry angle allows for deeper lines with good carry. This ball digs the corner pins out nicely.  I let a few thumbless bowlers try my Octane and the reaction was amazing! These bowlers got easy length with a devastating hit. I think high rev bowlers or slower speeds with have a winner with the Octane. I tested the Octane on a pretty fresh flat pattern for the video, but it was more at home when the lanes started to break down. The ball played either pattern well and the carry was great. I have played with the surface and it tunes easily up or down.
Motiv has really been pushing the envelope of performance and the balls keep getting better and better and seem to hit harder and harder. Motiv has had some awesome success on T.V. and the Regional Tours. As I go to tournaments around the South East I am seeing more and more Motiv balls on the ball returns. If you have not tried Motiv yet I suggest you do so you won’t be left behind.  Quoting a good friend and center Manger, “If you didn’t bring a Motiv tonight, you better get one drilled so you can compete!”

Summary:
The Octane gets easy length and hard backend
This is another sweet looking ball.
The higher entry angle creates great pin carry.
If you want an angular ball, you got it!

Review:

The Motiv Octane is the latest release from Motiv bowling. The Octane combines a proven core and a brand new cover that gives a backend motion like you have never seen. The Octane features Motiv’s proven Ouadfire core that provides a 2.55 RG that gives the Octane easy length down the lane and pair that with the brand new hybrid Agility SFX (Skid Flip Xtreme) that gives that Octane incredible length and strong backend motion, the Octane backend striking machine.

Comments:

To start on this piece is how amazing and strong this ball is on medium oil. I was huge fan of the Thrash Frenzy because I loved the length and the strong angular motion that it gave me and had many award scores on that piece. I was sadden when I was told that the Thrash Frenzy was discontinued but was promised had sadness would be short lived and boy were they right. The Octane is one of the biggest backend and angular pieces I have thrown to date. Like the Frenzy, the Octane gets my pout of trouble when I need a little more on the backend and the continuation is just insane like all the other Motiv bowling balls. Lower rev rate guys will love the length the Octane will get and will still get that strong angular motion at the backend and just destroy the pins. Medium to higher rev rate players the Octane will fill a definite need in their bag as the Octane’s agualr motion and steep angle to the pocket will have them play lines not a lot people are at.

We all know that Octane is highly flammable. The new piece from MOTIV is no different. Friction causes fire and when this ball gets to the friction is almost leaves burn out marks on the lane it changes direction so fiercely. This ball is extremely clean through the front and it allows players of all abilities to have the confidence to move left and loosen up their swing. There is no better feeling than opening up your angles and know that the friction will cause this ball to ignite off the spot. Trust that this ball will be more continuous than anything you have ever thrown. In the past, when I got left of 4th arrow, I would risk carrying because of continuation being not all there. This ball seems to never stop turning left. Once it goes, it GOES! The ball is so clean that I can stay behind it and play much straighter than normal thanks to its versatility. I drilled mine with the pin above my ring finger with a small weight hole. This is a ball that seems to find a place in anyone’s bag and will for a long time. Congrats to MOTIV for creating another gem.
