I was really happy to see that MOTIV was coming out with their first urethane release, the TANK. I was so intrigued, I got two. The first one with a very weak layout, (90*x5”x70*) and the second stronger: (60*x4 ½”x40*) with a P2 hole.  When I took to the lanes I found that the weaker layout covered about 5 less boards than the stronger one I drilled, which was just what I was looking for. I’ve been bowling since the late 1980’s so I must say that I had flashbacks of the “good old days” when urethane was king. That nice, early hooking even roll was has a great retro feel. It works great when playing in the track area going up the boards. But the TANK hits a lot harder than the urethanes I used to use back in the day.

After bowling several games, one thing that I noticed are my moves were much more subtle with the TANK, compared to reactive resin equipment.  I am able to keep the  pocket in front of me longer than I’m used to. I feel that my bad shots that drift high tend to stay out of trouble, leaving maybe a 4 pin, instead of a Greek Church. This is good news on a short sport pattern, or on a broken down house shot.

Here is a ball reaction video that I did for the TANK. In the video I compare the ball motion to the Ascent Solid, Ascent Peal, Venom Strike & Venom Toxin on a broken down house shot.

I feel that any competitive bowler needs a urethane in their bag, and the TANK is not just any other urethane ball. The proven low RG Gear core is a perfect match to the cover, to help the ball deliver a low driving trajectory through the pins, with less deflection than you’d typically see from a ball that’s lower on the hook scale.

Tank: 50 X 4 ¾ X 50

MOTIV’s current goal is to release bowling balls that will be able to provide bowlers with an arsenal of equipment to combat all conditions.

Description:  The Tank uses the same Gear Core found in both Venom’s, while introducing the new Ballistix Solid Urethane Coverstock.

Reaction:  The Tank has allowed me to start the ball in the track area so far in league and although that isn’t ideal for a league scoring pace I can see that on lighter or shorter conditions it will allow me to play that part of the lane when needed.  The Tank wants to start up very soon and has very little backend which is optimal for control.

Comparisons:  The Tank is just a touch cleaner in the front part of the lane compared to my Solid Ascent, where the Tank really differs is in the backend.  Once the Tank starts its trajectory that is pretty much the line it will hold from the foul line to pins, there is very little backend motion nor should there be for a Urethane ball.  Comparing it to the Venom Toxin since they both have the same core, the hybrid polished cover on the Venom Toxin allows the ball to be cleaner than the Tank but, once it starts to hook it shows just how much stronger it is compared to the Tank.

Summary:  Those looking for that old school urethane look MOTIV has released the Tank just for you!  The Tank will give you more options to confront shorter or lighter oil patterns. It is also a great option for those with very high rev rates when looking for something that hooks more reliable than your spare ball!

Likes: I am thrilled that MOTIV opted to come out with a urethane bowling ball. The Tank is a special bowling ball that offers extreme control. I used the ball on a variety of house shots at different centers. I got to use it quite a bit especially on fresh. The reason being there are quite a few high friction lane surfaces coupled with extreme wet/dry conditions front to back and side to side as well. I used the Tank on the USBC Open Championships Team pattern. I was able to play around the track area very direct and keep my angles closed. I didn't have to make these huge moves like I do with the modern equipment when transition occurs. I also didn't leave these weird designs when I overhit the ball and it ran through the nose. I personally feel that because MOTIV decided to use the GEAR core that this ball will be much more user friendly for the bowlers.

Dislikes: This is an extremely conditional piece of equipment! When it isn't working or stops working, without hesitation put it back in the bag. Don't give up frames to the field fighting the reaction. For those of you who grew up bowling in the reactive era and have never seen or used a urethane ball, it is a very different look on the lanes. Urethane starts up very early and is very smooth and mellow in the backend.

TANK!

The new Tank by Motiv is exactly that. A ball that is very smooth and predictable and still delivers a huge punch through the pins. The tank is a ball that rolls very well and picks up very early with the new Ballistix Solid Urethane Coverstock. Drilled at 70 x 4.25 x 75, still rolls smooth and then likes to pop on the back end. The Tank holds true to its urethane nature and never over or under reacts. It is very predictable and a great tool to have in the bag. Mine is primarily drilled for length to play on low volume and when I can play outside of the track area. Overall a great tool to have in the bag for low volume and dry conditions!

Ball: Tank
Core: Gear
Coverstock: Ballistix Solid Urethane
Finish:    2000 Grit Sand
Layout: 55° x 5”x 65°
Ball Speed: 18.5 mph
Rev Rate: 450+
What more can I say coming from a Urethane generation of bowlers back in the 80’s other than this ball isn’t your 80’s urethane. The name could not be more accurate because this ball hits like a Tank! I utilized the same layout as I have on my Thrash Frenzy and Venom Toxin to ball down when the heads or backends break down. It will hold without overreacting through heavy volumes of oil and plays extremely well off the outside of the lane. High rev rate players will benefit most from this ball as it is very controllable.
Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The Motiv Tank, I have to say that this ball really surprised me, I have never owned a urethane ball in my whole bowling career until this one, and I must say, it is a special tool to have. The gear core and the cover actually mix really well, with a true urethane roll, it still hits pretty hard for being what it is, I thought this ball would maybe be my practice tool for getting sharper, but realize that rolls very good on fresh lane conditions, and fighting over under conditions when playing further right. Overall this ball is a really good piece to have on you at all times, it is a fun, yet very effective ball and gets the job done. I look forward to using this ball more and more in the future.

The Ball: MOTIV Tank

The Layout: “Zeroed Out.” Pin above fingers, zero side and zero finger.

The Style: Power Stroker. 16.5-17 Speed. (Rev rate untested since shoulder injury.)

The Conditions: Riverside Lanes in Laughlin, Nevada. 40 FT House and 39 FT Modified Tournament Pattern. High friction environment.

The Plus: A smooth transitioning Urethane ball that looks fantastic going down a lane.

The Minus: It is Urethane so you get what you would expect from it. Not a minus exactly but can be misconstrued to be something it is not.

The Score: 5 out of 5.

The Review: I have long been a fan of more controllable bowling equipment as I have stated in many of my reviews in the past. Being on a byproduct of a high friction bowling environment, I find myself in dire situations at times when the oil breaks down and I am out of options to keep the ball on the right side of the head pin. Fortunately the new Tank allows me to keep ahead of the breakdown and have a great transition downlane with some remarkable hitting power thanks to the Gear core.

Now don’t let me fool you, this ball is still a Urethane throwback and as such is not designed to be a monster on the lanes. Due to some videos floating around on the web, people seem to think that the Tank is a hooking machine which is a laugh at times. The comment I make to people is that just because a ball is dull and looks great on a video does not mean that it is designed to be a monster. However, what this ball is made to do fills a huge gap in the Motiv line and allows a great comparison to other Urethane pieces on the market today.

In conclusion, the Gear core combined with the controllability of the Urethane coverstock makes for one heck of a ball and a great addition to any bowlers’ bag. If you need that niche piece of equipment in your bag, pick up a Tank and get motivated today!!!

Motiv Tank Review-
I guess with my style of bowling I never thought Id be in a position to again use or need  a Urethane ball. Nevertheless just this week found myself in a position where I needed a Urethane piece. Old wood house ( yes they do still exist) very low volume house pattern and against some of the bowlers in my area that are good on house shots..yes I said it on house shots. Fortunately for me this was not your typical house shot and the control and predictability the Tank provided me was unbelievable. Consistent roll and read is what you get. A great piece for those dryer conditions that will allow you to cheat the pattern and stay in your comfort zone. This ball certainly lives up to its name as it like all my other Motiv equipment Hits like a Tank!  Strong drive and consistent roll through the pins delivers the carry power you need on this type of condition. Oh and it just looks cool too!  Motiv hits the mark again with a great additional to your arsenal . If you like Urethane or jest need something to get you through on those tough dryer conditions the Tank fits the bill. Hit the mark the the new Motiv Tank!

I just used my new Tank last night for 2 games. All I can say is Wow! This ball has power to crush pins. Had 15 Strikes in a row with it. Dropped a solid 7 first shot in tenth to end the string. Yes I am Left-handed. Bumped the ball out from 18 to 3 and still came screaming back to the pocket. Nearly had a messanger take out the 7. Ball had just as much movement as the bowlers in the scratch league using the over reactive stuff. I was just a pair over.
Will testing this ball at another house tomorrow.
Not a staff member of Motiv. But have switched my arsenal over to them since I first bought one of the first SX1's.

pin under bridge
pin length 3"
CG kicked out. less than 1/2" still legal for USBC tourn.

The MOTIV TANK

Tester:   MattyG
Speed:  Med (14.5 to 15.5 on camera)
Rev Rate:  300+
Axis Rotation: Med to low (30*-40*)
Axis Tilt: Med to high (12*-20*)

P.A.P.: 4 1/2 right, 1/8 up

Drilling layout: "MO"tion Hole with 1 1/4" hole 4" deep

Surface: 2,000 O.O.B.

Patterns: 43' modified Stone Street pattern and 38' THS

Review:
I was never on for Urethane.  My rev rate and speed never made for
a good match.  Sure I could play "safe"  but 5 pins were embarrassing to
have to pick up all the time.  I had previously owned the Natural and Natural Pearl.  They did what Urethane did.  Go 20' then roll out to the pocket.  I decided to try something different with the Tank.  I was looking for a way to increase length (not using surface) while increasing the amount of flare down lane.  I decide to try out this "MO"tion Hole that everyone was talking about.  The ball had great specs to start with because it had very little top weight and a pin that would be pretty close to center of grip if I place the pin over my ring finger.  I did have to cheat the hole over about 3/4 of a inch though.  I would have rolled over it if not.  Glad I did the "tape test" before.
I was really please with how the ball hit on the burn before adding the hole.  I though it actually got more length than previous urethane releases.  It had almost a small entry level reactive ball reaction.  I decided to commit to trying out the "MO"tion hole even though I really liked the reaction as-is.  I was NOT disappointed.  I got to throw it on a 43' pattern where the oil volume is pretty high.  The ball was so-so.  It rolled just like eve other urethane ball.  Had to play that typical closed up angle or almost point it to the pocket.  The one stand out was how hard it hit.  Instead of deflecting it really drove through the pins.  I was very impressed but still on the fence.  Later that week I got to try it out on a freshly oiled 38' THS.  This house is famous for it's walled up pattern. Low rev dream and high rev nightmare.  You know what I mean!  Tried the Tank out where you would think [straight up 5].  I was actually going high BUT not until it came of the end of the pattern.  Weird??  So I gave it a little room.  Went 7 at the arrows to 5. Came in a little high but again it was down lane when it moved.  Went 8 to 5 and the ball was just amazing.  It crushed the pocket so hard.  It was smooth and predictable but I had that special ability that only urethane equipment can give.  I knew, before the ball hit the arrows, that it was a strike.  It is an amazing ball to say the least.  I was able to play outside that GREAT WALL and still have hard hitting power!!!

Conclusion:
The Tank is not for everyone (unless you want a bad ass spare ball).  It will be a great Tool for learning how to close up angles for some, the answer to controlling rev rate for others.  But the thing that makes it special is how hard it hits going through the pins even after you think it is rolled out.  It can be you best ball if you are looking to really control the lane instead of cover boards.  I would recommend the Tank to all bowlers looking for a ball actually practice with. You can learn a lot from the Urethane ball motion.  As a "strike" ball it really can be an asset to those high rev rate people that need help/control.
I use mine as my primary spare ball.  A little hand position change and a touch more speed makes the Tank look like a bullet.  But keeping it in my bag will always give me the sense of security.  When there is no look or super bad carry I can always pull out the Tank and fire it up the outside.  I have no doubt this ball will come into play more than a few times.

LANE CONDITION

Length:41 Feet

Volume: Medium

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): THS

COMMENTS

Likes: Works great on high friction conditions; smooth ball motion

Dislikes: Not an everyday ball

Review:

The Tank is the latest bowling ball made by Motiv. This wonderful product, The Tank, is built to dominate the lanes on high friction with strong, controlled ball motion that will lay waste to anything in its path. The Tank is built with the new Ballistic Urethane cover and the proven Gear Core, The Tank offers low RG/Low Diff that puts it in an early motion down the lane and strong control with smooth predictability. The Tank will destroy the pins and has nice impact for being Urethane. The Tank is the newest product in the wonderful line of Motiv Bowling products.

INNER CORE          Gear
COVERSTOCK     Ballistix Solid Urethane
FINISH          2000 Grit Sanded

Comments:

What can I say other than that when The Tank was announced and being a High rev player I was excited for this product because I needed something that when my Thrash Frenzy was hooking too much, The Tank would fill in that gap. What I like about this ball is the Gear Core and the Urethane cover is nice combo because I get a smooth ball reaction and no overreaction. High rev and two hander’s will fall in love with the tank, as well as lower rev players because if you get on high friction conditions like old wood house, The Tank will fit right in your arsenal.
I recommend this ball to all player types if you’re looking for something that you need on high friction conditions.

Bowler Stats-Ball Speed 15.5 MPH Rev Rate-App 280 Axis of Rotation-30
to 60 degrees Axis Tilt 9 degrees Right Handed PAP-5 over, 1/4" up

The Motiv Tank is designed for "high friction lanes" (dry) according
to Motiv. The full description says "Armored with our new Ballistixâ„¢
Urethane cover, The Tankâ„¢ is sanded to a 2000 grit finish. Allying
this finish with the low RG / low Diff Gearâ„¢ core, this machine is
put into motion early, driving down the lane with powerful control
and smooth predictability. It hits the pins with a devastating
impact."

The ball is as advertised. It pushes through the heads with ease.
revs up early in the mid lanes and make a strong continuous arc
ove all the way through the pin deck.  The core/cover
combo allows me to play up the boards in the very driest of  house
shots. I am  someone who prefers keeping the ball in front of me so
this ball was easy for me to work with once I became confident that I
could carry with Urethane.  The core works amazingly well with this
cover.  The core of the Ball, Diff Gear, is a low RG ball that wants
to roll early.  If I tug the ball into the soup the ball skates a
small bit but the cover and the core allow it to continue to read the
lane. It is a great ball for me late in long tournaments squads or
outside the oil line on house shots.

If you use this ball as designed, in high friction environments, it
will be a very effective ball. With the Tank Motiv created another
piece of my standard tournament arsenal.

I'm very colorblind but the Neomark Graphic makes the ball very
pleasing to the eye and give it good shelf appeal, the Tank logo
looks awesome on the camouflage ball, and $5 of each ball goes to the
Wounded Warrior Project.
