TR2
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Ball NPS Score: 100.00
- CORE: Thrust
- COVERSTOCK: MOTIVat-R
- FINISH: 800 Wet Sand
- RG RATING: 16#-2.53, 15#-2.54, 14#-2.57, 13#-2.61, 12#-2.66
- RG DIFFERENTIAL: 16#-.048, 15#-.052, 14#-.048, 13#-.042, 12#-.031
- FLARE POTENTIAL: 5"+ (Medium-High)
- HOOK POTENTIAL: 45 (High)
- LENGTH: 20 (Medium-Low)
- DESCRIPTION: The MOTIV TR2 carves through deep oil and punishes the pins. It features the Thrustâ„¢ inner core, NeoMarkâ„¢ Graphics, and MOTIVat-R reactive coverstock.
Thrust Inner Core - The MOTIV TR2 provides a strong arcing reaction and stores energy for a punishing finish. The Thrustâ„¢ inner core RG is 2.54 with a differential of .052 (15# ball).
MOTIV at-R Reactive Coverstock - The TR2 bowling ball cover has been equipped with MOTIVat-Râ„¢ reactive urethane. The deep blue cover is wet sanded at the factory to an 800 finish for incredible traction through heavy oil. Caution: This finish builds up a great deal of friction. If this box finish is used on medium oil the ball could roll out straight on the backend. For medium oil, a 4000 sanded finish is recommended. You may even want to polish it up for a little more length.
NeoMark Urethane Graphics - A vibrant 2-color yellow and white NeoMark graphic, which jumps off the deep blue coverstock.
Reverb Outer Core - The Reverb outer core of the TR2 is a low-density polyester resin with pin piercing hardness and strength. Rather than absorb impact energy, this outer core reverberates energy as it explodes through the pins.

This review of the TR2 was posted in July of this year under other equipment.
Since we now have a MOTIV board I am re-posting it.
Hope this review helps.

My Information:
Ball Speed: 15-16 Mph Axis Tilt: 15 degrees
Axis Rotation: 45 degrees Rev Rate: 250/265 rpms

Ball Spec information:
Core: Thrust/Symmetrical Cover: MOTIVat-R reactive
RG: 2.54/15lbs Diff: 0.52/15lbs Surface: Out of Box 800 grit wet sand
Color: Deep Blue/Neon Yellow logo

Drill Specs Ball #1:
Pin to PAP: Pin up above ring finger 4.5 X 4.25 with no extra hole

Drill Specs Ball #2:
Pin to PAP: Pin outside ring finger 4.5 X 4 with no extra hole

Lanes:
Brunswick Pro-Anvil lanes Ages of Lanes: 8 yrs

The TR2 features the Thrust core found in the TX1 a medium RG design, with a higher differential. The cover is the new MOTIVat-R reactive, the most aggressive & biggest hooking ball MOTIV has yet to produce. The TR2 produces a very heavy continuous arc at the breakpoint and gets a continuation roll through the pin deck. The best condition for the TR2 is heavy oil.

I will be informing you in the following ball review, how you will be able to see the differences between, House, PBA Cheetah and Shark Patterns bowled on with the TR2.

Fresh House shot with 42 feet of oil:
Drilling #1
The ball had early revs and a great mid-lane read with a heavy arc at the back end. The ball continues to turn and has excellent continuation through the pin deck, with great pin carry.
When I would hang the ball right it would recover and still find the pocket. I was able to get about 4 to 5 inches of Track flare.

Drilling #2
This drilling had even earlier revs with a dramatic bite in the mid-lane with less hook at the backend. But, this drilling allows me to play the oil line straighter with continuous back end motion off of the breakpoint. I could miss left with this TR2 and would not get a large jump of the breakpoint. This helped with the heavy oil and longer patterns without getting into too much trouble and being able to score. I was able to get about 5 to 6 inches of Track flare.

Cheetah Pattern:
I used both TR2 drilling #1 and #2 with the out of the box surface. I found that this was way too much ball for this pattern.

Drilling #1: changing the surface by sanding to a 4000 finish with no polish. I found with this drilling it had too much early revs and hook for me. I could not get a read because of the ball began too early at the heads and mid-lanes.

Drilling #2: changing the surface by sanding it to 4000 and finishing with MOTIV power gel polish. I was able to get a read. This TR2 was still a little too early, mid-lanes were ok, and I was not able to find a good reaction overall on this pattern, drilling or surface change.

The GT1 with the correct drilling does have a better look and reaction on this pattern.

PBA Shark Pattern:
Drilling #2
This drilling allowed me to play this pattern with my feet at 24th board, rolling the ball over the 16th board and the ball going out over the 8th board. The TR2 allowed me to hold the line without giving up area, that I had intended to play. I like to play the longer patterns and going more direct without having to move deeper. The TR2 allowed me to miss right by 1-2 boards and still made it back to the pocket. Also when I tugged the ball left by 1-2 boards the TR2 held the line to the pocket. This was the best read I had ever had on the Shark Pattern. With the earlier roll, heavy revs, and longer continuous roll off the breakpoint. This helped kick out the 10 pins with ease and clearing the deck. Most style of players should be able to use the TR2 on the Shark Pattern.

Overall:
I believe that the TR2 will fit well into any players arsenal. Higher speed strokers will love the early revs/hook and recovery that this ball has to offer. Tweeners will be able to find the oil line and still be at ease in their comfort zone, with the use of the early revs and mid-lane read. Crankers will be able to move inside the other 2 styles of players and use the longer continuous arc to control the backend of the lane without over reaction and have great recovery.

Hook: covers more the any other ball previous released by MOTIV by about 8 to 10 boards.

Length: Very early 3 of 10

Control: The core and cover stock allows a very large hook with a controllable breakpoint.

Cover Stock: I found that the surface adjustments are easy to sand with abralon pads, scotch brite, and wet/dry sand paper. The cover also polishes up very well compared to other products I have used before.

The TR2 ball should be a hit and be the start of bigger things for MOTIV.

ball #1
pin directly above middle finger, cg slightly to the right of center
2000 surface

ball #2
pin 1 1/2in above middle figner, cg slightly right of center
polished out of box

This ball is just plain crazy!  I love it.  These are the top 2 balls in my arsenal in reguards to total hook.  #1 wants to read the lanes early and give me a nice, strong arcing motion throughout the entire lane, without losing energy for the backend.  #2 is my hiden gem.  I polished it up with a longer pin to help it get through the lanes a bit and OH MY.  this ball clears the fronts better than #1 and reads the mids very nicely, even with the polish. And this ball just flat out hauls on the backend.  Because of the backend movement of this one, it usually will play stronger than #1.  Both of these balls allow me to crush on heavier oil patterns when the GT1's don't quite want to make the corner.
If you are looking for somthing that HOOKS look no further, this is your ball.  I threw both with box surface and on a house shot I had to loft the gutter playing 6-7th arrow to get the best look because they just wanted to hook sooooooooooooooooo much.

Right Handed
325 Rev rate
16 mph at pins

Finally got enough oil to use this ball with out having to change the surface. Bowled in a tournament where they put out a 43 ft heavy oil pattern. I was able to stay with the TR2 much longer than expected. It reads the mid lane and just continues right through the pins. I was able to avg 237 on the long pattern when the tournament avg for my group was 204. I was waiting for the flat tens to start then make the switch to something with less surface but they never came. I just kept moving in and carrying all ten. I have had problems in the past looking for a heavy oil ball. I did not match up with the original Cell. I usually get a ball the burns up early and has nothing left at the back of the pattern. Not with this ball. This is a great ball for heavy oil in box condition. I will update my review after I get a chance to use it on a house shot. Thanks for reading.

I bowl right handed with a semi high ball speed and rev rate. Got this ball last week and have not had the chance to throw it that much. Reason being, I can not find a shot with enough oil. This ball just flat out hooks. I pinned mine down with the cg kicked out an inch and a half. The ball reads the midlane and takes off at the first chance it can without the thought of stopping. My ball roles a little funny, but it is a consistent funny role that hits harder than anything else I have. If you are looking for a ball that will hook through just about anything, this is the ball for you.
I would like to thank Scott Wilbur the president of Motiv for giving me this ball to throw.

I have had this ball for a while now and used it on a bunch of different conditions. I feel I can know give a good review. Mine is drilled with pin slightly above ring finger and CG just below and out a touch. Pin is about 3". Out of the box the ball cleared the heads on heavy oil before going into a strong acring roll. I used it on some sport pattrens which required me to play near the gutter. All I can say was ball was a truck. With the OOB surface, it did need some head oil though. But once it hit the dry, it started coming, controllably, but it was going left. After playing with surfaces on some of my other equipment, I ended up having the TR react very close to another ball. I was however missing something in the arsenal so I decided to do a coverstock tweak. I hit the ball with 1000 abralon. This made a HUGE difference. My TR is now my go to ball at the start of every session. It gives me a great read on what the lanes are doing. It still has the same arcy roll but now does it on lower volume conditions. Plus it still hits like a truck. This is a great ball when playing a little more to the outside. The reaction is smooth and predictable and gives you a good read on what the pattern is. All and all, another great ball from motiv.

I Just had this ball drilled up Saturday, I was looking for a heavy Oil ball, ball speed 15mph Stoker right handed, I was looking for something that would move on the back end, especially when lanes are flooded, TR2 15lbs, pin under ring finger, I threw the ball on THS, and the ball was moving great, I played inside the 10 and it was turning well on back end, then I thew out over the 5 board, and the ball was screaming back. For my low rev's, this ball was moving like crazy, I can't wait until I get in heavy oil to see how this ball rolls. For me this ball is a monster, every time it hits the pins it sounds like a shotgun blast. I would like to say thanks to Bill @ Westlane proshop, Great job on the drilling, and "Yes" I trust you.  The ball does exactly what you said it would do. I will keep you posted.

2nd post, with 6 games on the TR2 I was invited to bowl in a behind the curtain tournament, if you haven't seen it, it's different, a curtain keeps you from seeing the pins, you roll the ball under a curtain, then you check and see how you did, this is a no-tap tourney, I shot 700, 800 with handicap. the TR2 was crushing the pocket, I had a few light hits, and the pins were flying, This ball hits like nothng else, 90 bowlers, I'm hoping for top 5. I'll keep you posted.

Follow up with the TR2, I guess I posted too early when purchased, have had the ball since Apr 2010, I thought this ball would be stronger with a stacked leverage, I am a Stroker 15 mph, High track, with the stacked leverage pin low ball tracked over fingers, because of high flare, once fixed, this ball to me was junk 179.00 down the drain, I have a Total NV that's stronger, down 20 pins in average, working with this ball, I did coverstock changes and tried everything I could, Maybe I just didn't match up well with this ball, back to my Yeah Baby, I need to get my average back up.  Lane Masters here I come..

Likes: Good looking ball, but I posted some mis-information on this balls reaction, I had a bad drill
that tracked over my fingers due to the high flare, It's not the balls or the Makers fault, Need to have this ball plugged, and try again.. thanks

LANE CONDITION

Length: 40 feet

Volume: don't know exact amount, but it was a lot.

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): Sport Compliant pattern, 2:1 ratio

COMMENTS

Likes: very early rolling, strong/smooth continuation down lane.

Dislikes: none, just save this piece for when a flood exists or to smooth out wet/dry.

Ball matches up really well to longer/heavier volumes and lane conditions. Also can be used as a ball to smooth out the wet/dry and make your reaction more consistent and predictable. I am saving this ball for the Scorpion and Shark patterns. I changed the surface to a 500 grit abralon finish. This is the most aggressive ball in my bag!

 DRILLING

My specs are as follows: speed - 19 mph, rev rate - 350 rpm, axis tilt - 10 degrees, PAP - 3 3/8 over, 5/8 up.

I drilled my TR2 with a 55 x 4.5 x 35 dual angle layout. No extra hole was necessary.
