Title: Do I need a new Motiv ball?
Post by: J_w73 on February 14, 2017, 05:39:24 PM
I will list the balls from strongest to weakest with the reaction in comparison to the ball above it.  Stronger balls for my game don't hook more, just earlier.

Covert Revolt 1000 ABRALON - EARLY SMOOTH REACTION. LITTLE BACK END
Revolt Havoc  2000 - A BIT LONGER WITH MORE BACK END ANGLE
Venom Shock 2000 - LONGER, MORE OVER ALL SHAPE AND BACK END
Sigma Sting 2000 - ROLLS EARLIER BECAUSE OF DRILL, WEAKER AND SMOOTHER     .                            BACK END- COVERS LESS BOARDS .UNIQUE SHAPE AND USAGE
Paranoia 4000 + POLISHED - LONGER WITH BIG BACKEND MOVEMENT
Ascent Apex Pink/Green 4000 + POLISH- LONG AND WEAK- BACKEND DEPENDS ON    .                                CONDITIONS. DON'T REALLY USE
Rebel Tank 4000 - LONG, WEAK, SMOOTH - DON'T REALLY USE
Arctic Sniper 4000 + POLISH - LONG , SPARE BALL

I am pretty comfortable with my arsenal and it gives me a pretty good progression when I need to ball down. I had a Primal Rage that I finally got rid of because it was never what I wanted it to be. Never strong enough and never enough back end, so I gave up on it.

Right now I think if I got anything it would be to replace something else.  What do you think?  Is there room to fit anything in with what I have?  What ball needs to be replaced with something newer?  I have been thinking of a Jackal Ghost or something for true heavy oil, but not sure I need it.  I usually just put more surface on my Covert or Havoc if I have heavier oil.

Couple questions.
-Is there a ball that just doesn't seem to carry anymore?
-Is there a ball you're just tired of looking at or shy away from using?
-How's the volume and surface you typically play on?

Why do you ask? bored? or want to justify the fact you just want to buy another ball?
I suggest waiting.

I agree with the above, more information is needed to decipher what you are really looking for.

If you look at progressions, what do you start with and what do you move to when the shot transitions and becomes drier?  I think you need to determine what is missing for you before you can just spit out a lot of equipment without saying what you need.

They all serve a purpose and seem to work on the right condition.  I touch up and clean the surface pretty regularly and haven't seen too much change in reaction for any ball.  I find a use for most every ball. I got rid of my Tag and Primal Rage because they just never worked when I used them.  Used a Raptor Talon for a while, but replaced that with the Covert Revolt.  Don't see too many dry conditions so I don't use the Ascent or Tank that much.  I usually play on heavier volume sport conditions.

Usually start out at the top because the Covert reads early and is controllable.  If the Covert is too early or I need a bit more back end then I will go to the Revolt Havoc.  From there it is just a matter of length.  If the ball starts reading early I will make a move but when I have trouble getting the ball through the heads and to my breakpoint, I just start working down the line of balls.

Jackal Ghost if you think you need a little stronger ball. Primal Fear if you think you need a clean angular option to move in with but not quite as big a drop down as the Paranoia. Otherwise, I don't really see a Motiv only option that makes sense.

I was going to pull the trigger on a Jackal right before they were banned. I threw one and it seemed to actually make a move in the oil when my other balls were laboring.  Something stronger covers usually never do for me.

So Jackal Ghost or Jackal LE?

I would go Ghost since it's easier to get your hands on. PSO can actually get those in.

First of all, the answer to the question "do I need a new Motiv ball" is always 'yes.' :)

Seriously though, I'd consider a Trident. It has what to me is a very unique combination of good length, a controllable reaction, and yet huge hooking potential. I love my Havoc Revolt, and the Trident is similar, but 'more' in every way. Get one!
