Octane Burn~Oil Sensitive
« on: February 13, 2017, 11:37:36 AM »
Question for those that have used the Octane Burn which looks to being closed out in near future.  Is the Octane Burn oil sensitive skids on large puddles or carry down?  I had a Venom Panic that was very oil sensitive so much so that it was not a ball I liked during and after transition.  What say you?

Thanks!
Scott

I don't own it, but being a light oil ball I'm going to lean more towards a yes it will wiggle in puddles.

Not sure about the sensitivity issue.  I don't have the Octane Burn, was never sold on it by any feedback.

After watching Justin's video, I get the impression it might react quickly and still smooth, and also not very strong.  On all of the shots by Justin, he only played the end of the pattern and stayed away from the outside.  Both patterns were in the 40 foot range so the ball reacted well enough in the short 20 feet but they were never outside 10.  Ball looks pretty smooth too which may be good since most will want to use this on burn/light oil conditions instead of moving in deep and bouncing the dry with it.

I still keep an Octane Burn in my bag. For me, the Burn is much more even of a shape than I was expecting. Not super smooth, just very much a benchmark look. I drilled it 4x40 with a tiny hole down VAL (small enough that it really didn't make much of a difference in reaction).

Background - My home house puts out a variant of stone street, with the variation being more oil in the middles that turn the pattern into a pretty heavy overblock. I have fairly high ball speed and revs, leaning a little speed dominant.

At my home house, I typically don't like my Burn on the burn. Our outsides fry quickly, and it can skate on the oil in the middle if I have to bump left too far too quickly.

The ball stays in my bag because I really like it on the fresh. I can play a pretty straight angle even with my rev rate without it overreacting on me (had a 299 just last Tuesday doing that). That league is more of a fun league, and I have one of the higher rev rates in the league. In that league, I can stay left of everyone with the burn but still be fairly straight, allowing me to keep the burn in play all night.

My second shift trio league shows the negatives more. My teammates are a rev monster and a two hander, and the outsides are already burned from the earlier men's league. I get forced left quickly, and the Burn will struggle to stand up and make the turn, especially on small misses in (skates it's way into a bucket).

For what it's worth, I've used it as a transition ball in tournaments at other houses with better blended shots, sport shots at my home house, and at nationals last year. It was a great ball in all of those scenarios (including really bailing my out late in the nationals team event last year). It doesn't stay in my bag by lack of choice, I really do love the notion when I can use it. Unfortunately, those times tend to be outside my home house.

Hope this helps.

PS. Had a panic. Other than a 299 with it on the fresh, I hated it. Definitely more skid in the oil than I get from my Burn.

Thanks spmcgivern!  I usually compare more to Mr. Magolan as his stats. and mine are closer except ball speed.....mine is lower.  Justin's tilt is low and way higher rev rate and I am 17* and 300.  I have seen a few original Paranoia's that seemed oil sensitive.  BTM rates the Octane Burn slightly higher in total hook that the original Paranoia.  IF you can believe BTM's reviews which I am not enamored of lately.  BJI seems to get it closer.

Not sure of the reason for the questioning on the Burn.  I was never a fan of it from my limited viewing of it.  Because of that, I never got one.

If someone is looking for something like the Burn, I think a Venom Cobra drilled appropriately could be what someone looking at the Burn could do differently.  I would venture it would be more predictable.  For moving in and playing in the puddle, I prefer stronger equipment when my Shock is hooking at my feet.

If someone is looking at cheap pricing, then I would be tempted to drill the Burn very strong (maybe even P3/P4 strong) to help it in any way.

Hank's description is what I have seen also.  Good description Hank.

I thought about the Cobra being a hybrid would better than the Panic.  I guess the Panic turned me off.  Though the Shock is the best Motiv ball for me by far.  I have had good luck with the Quadfire weight block in QZ-1 Red.....that's why I asked about the Burn.  Primal Fear seems quite few notches stronger than the Shock though I have no issues moving inside deeper in fact that's my progression.

Once a little friction for bounce is created, the Fear will take off down lane.

For me on a house shot with medium oil it's the Forza GT and the Octane Burn for a nice 1/2 punch.  On light oil it's the Venom Shock and the Venom Cobra for a great 1/2 combo.
My Octane Burn allows me to stay right when my GT starts hooking left (usually the third game).  My Burn is drilled pin down with a hole on P4.  It is smooth through the front, but the P4 hole gives it a kick on the backend that one would not expect on pin down without a hole.
Do I match up to the Octane Burn.....yes I do.  I love this ball so much I bought two more for the future. I think Motiv has done a great job in having many combinations of a 1/2 punch available in their line up.

I love the Octane Burn. Hated the Panic and it doesn't compare to the Burn.

One of the previous posts mentions something about the Burn being close to the Paranoia, nope, not even in the neighbor hood.

The Burn is a step down from the Venom Shock, then the Venom Cobra is another step down in total hook, but a different shot shape as well.

The Burn is not going to handle a ton of oil, but is fantastic on short/dry patterns

I own and use them all, this is my opinion. Your mileage may vary.

This is a really interesting post to me, because it's almost entirely opposite of my experience with the Burn. For me, it does absolutely nothing on any oil, bus as soon as there's any burn at all, it becomes super flippy and hard to control. I kept it in my bag for 6 months, and I never was able to find a shot where it was useful. I ended up giving it away.

Bear in mind that I'm a huge Motiv fanboy, and after returning to bowling last year ending a 15+ year layoff I haven't owned one non-Motiv ball...so I _wanted_ to like it :)

On this subject, I would love to see a new Tank with a more aggressive core...something that could be drilled for length and back-end (obviously it would be relative...not expecting huge hook). For me, all of Motiv's light oil stuff is still too strong. I just punched a Tag, and while it gets cleanly through the heads, it still moves very aggressively on an even slightly dry back-end.

For me, the Burn is very oil sensitive.  When the pattern is right, it works fine.  I rarely see a pattern I can use it on.

I had the Octane Burn and it didn't perform for me. Still throwing the Thrash Frenzy which continues to perform without fail.

Its preforms best for me in two situations: 1. One of the houses I bowl league at as backends that are fried and on top of that the lane guy maintains the lanes fairly well so the backends turn on a dime. 2. Sport shots and animal patterns no matter the length, after the preferred area becomes burned up game 5 ish. I can move back to my starting position and throw the exact same shot.
