Title: Gem heavy oil ball
Post by: ThomasBowling on April 07, 2016, 03:14:23 PM
I'm looking to buy a new heavy oil ball that's retired. Just not by 15 year ok :P
I'm most interested in Motiv, Hammer & C300 (Don't mention the other 2 in this thread).
I'm a stroker, low rev rate, slightly above avg speed. Barelly any curve, very straight.
Axis tilt is barelly tilting :P
And I can spare the 10 pin on medium oil with my C300 Swerve. That's how little hook I can create :P So keep that in mind when posting.

Doesn't have to be considered a gem :P
Just has to be a great agressive ball that'll hook great on heavy oil.

GO.

I've gotten many recommendations on Bowlers Uniting.
One said that the SR2 hooks a lot. He's like me apparently.
Many said Raptol Talon, but the PSO I go to doesn't have it. So that one's a no go for now. Besides the PSO said that the coverstock on that one wasn't that good.

The SR2 is not a heavy oil ball by any measure.

The Raptor Talon is an oil monster for some people, but others claim it doesn't hook at all for them. It hooked a ton for me.

The Raptor P7 was considered a heavy oil ball. I never threw one, so I can't say how it worked.

The Sigma Hybrid was decent at handing oil, just not a complete flood.

I have Raptor Talons, Raptor P7s and Sigma Hybrid #15 NIB if interested in any of these.

It's a great ball, but not a true heavy oil ball. Perhaps if you changed the surface to 1000 instead of the box finish.

The Raptor Talon fit the definition of a true oiler in most hands that I saw it in. The ball dug in very quickly, which made it smooth and steady through the lane. Just to clarify though, keep in mind that most heavy oil balls don't really "hook" a whole lot; they grab the lane quickly and arc a lot. That's generally what you need on long and/or heavy patterns, not hook down the lane. If you're looking for hook, you'd need something that stores some energy for the move down the lane.

Got any suggestions for such a ball?
C300, Hammer or Motiv ball.

You should maybe also clarify weight you are looking for.  Looks like you are throwing 14#?

I haven't really thrown anything other than Brunswick/DV8/Radical for the past year, so my knowledge of C300, Motiv, and Hammer isn't what it once was. I'm sure some of the resident experts throwing those manufacturers can offer you some suggestions there. If you want any info on Brunswick-line stuff that fit that description, let me know.

Hammer and C300 are not brands I throw, so no idea.

In the current Motiv lineup, the Rage Remix would be a reasonable choice.

I throw both the Swerve and Scandal. If one of these two balls don't provide enough grab and movement in heavy oil, you're probably looking for a ball that doesn't exist.

As previously stated, nothing hooks in heavy oil. The holy grail of bowling is finding where the friction is, and lining up appropriately to take advantage of it. Try taking your Scandal and/or Swerve down to 500 and see if that makes a noticeable difference.

Just be aware that if you take a strong ball and put it at 500 grit, it's going to read the lane right away and really struggle to retain energy down the lane unless you're bowling on an absolute lake of oil!

Agreed. I only suggested 500 grit because he specifically specified "heavy oil". Also, given that the OP says he's extremely rev challenged, he might very well need earlier roll. Personally, I think he'd be better off with an aggressive pearl for energy retention. Different strokes for different bowlers.  :)

The PSO has a Covert Revolt on storage, but he wants full prize for it.
I'm wondring if he is mixing the Covert Revolt and the new version of the ball, Revolt Vengeance.
Said that I'd rather buy a new Motiv ball for full prize then.

I'll just have to wait and see which balls he'll sell for cheap when he gets here.
