giving motiv a second look
« on: April 22, 2016, 11:50:36 AM »
I had the Primal TV4 several years ago and I hated it. I tried diff surfaces to no avail. It was like  8) for a  moment, then :o which made me go  ??? on most nights I used it. I bowled on 40' THS on SPL and Pro Lane, with OOB, more surface and less surface. I had my favorite layout on it - 4x4x2 and it was just o/u for me.

Then I read all the great reviews on it, mostly by staffers which I thought was Bull doo doo brown. And having two hyroads which was great on THS and Sport, I gave this ball away with less than 25 games if I remember. I really thought I'd like the Primal, but the cover was kinda tough to figure out.

BUT NOW........

Last night I threw the Motiv Venom Shock which was own by another bowler and I was impressed. I can see it having issues if the heads go away with my style and the surface I bowl on mostly, but still, the ball motion is smooth and yet strong....

Though I don't really need a ball, I'm eager to try Motiv again. Either with the Venom Shock or Venom Cobra. I just got to make up my mind. I like the look of the SHock, but I don't see it as true Light oil ball unless it's surface is touched. but the damn Venom cobra looks bad ass lol.

I loved(and still love) my Primal TV4, but it's probably just that I match up well to the Thrust core as I have a TZ3 that I kill it with on a dryer condition.

Get a Venom Shock, it's a great value at it's price point. If you like how it rolls, then you have an excuse to get that pretty new Venom Cobra.

The Shock is my go to ball on everything. I have a Cobra and it is cleaner than the Shock (obviously) and is a perfect compliment to the solid cover stock Shock. They are a great 1-2 punch.

Venom Shock is the all-time best Motiv ball for myself and the Octane Burn seems to match up with more than not.  Those two are the best in their line-up.  For me, I would not think about any other Motiv ball the rest are total match up specific.  The VS and OB match up to a lot more bowlers than anything in the Motiv line up.  I have not seen the Cobra yet so that is the only ball that I would consider.  The Panic, Graffiti Tag, Ascents etc are all match up specific.

The Shock is a great value for the price.  You really get a lot of versatility with it.  The Revolt Havoc is a good option for medium-heavy as it tends to read early but is smooth throughout and continuous in back.  It helps you blend out the pattern, similar to what you'd see with the Ebonite GB2.  But that is going to be more condition specific.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what the Cobra can do.

If you can find a Sigma Sting out there, that is nearly identical to the Hy-Road except I find that it has a little more motion in back for my game.  Great benchmark ball.  Actually anything with the Sigma core (Sigma Tour, Sigma Hybrid, Sigma Sting) works well as a benchmark, provided you can find them.
