Which 2 balls to buy?
« on: May 04, 2014, 08:11:08 PM »
Hey there Motiv fans!

It's been a couple years since I've thrown Motiv (original Sigma Tour) and have mostly been throwing Storm/Roto the past year but I keep wanting to try the newer Motiv stuff. I'm rebuilding my arsenal and I think I want to go back to Motiv. I would like to start off with 2, a benchmark type ball and I'm not sure which after that.
I'm really leaning towards the Venom Shock, everything about it looks amazing and the GT1 was one of my favorite balls I've thrown in recent years, so I'm looking forward to trying out the Gear core in a newer piece.

I've been doing extremely well with the Roto Grip Uproar in my current leagues.
I'm a higher rev player. Here's a bad video to get an idea of my style.

What are your suggestions?

I probably shouldn't even post siince I can't help you but just wanted to say that I began throwing Motiv approx 5 months ago and love both of my Motiv balls. Both are so reliable and versatile for me. I have the Primal Scream of which is now discontinued and the Thrash Frenzy. Based on the performance of my Primal Scream, if I were going to buy another ball tomorow to replace it, it would probably be the Primal Rage. I'm sure some of the newer balls may be better than the Rage, but that is what I would buy. As for the Thrash Frenzy, I am surprised even though it has been around for awhile, that it isn't more popular as it is so clean thru the heads and really strong with no roll out on the back end for me.

However, listen to others that throw a lot of Motiv and not myself as they are better qualified to help you.

Venom shock is a great ball to start with. It will have more midlane read than your uproar, while maintaining great continuation and drive. It's really an excellent ball. From there depending on whether you want to go up or down in overall strength there are options either way. If you're after more overall, take a look at the primal rage (if you want skid-snap) revolt if you want something more even. Below the shock there's the tribal, or ascent pearl or apex.

If I were you I would start with the shock, and decide on the next one based on that. You won't be disappointed in the shock.

Feel free to let me know if you've got any questions at all. I'd love to help more if you'd like. Welcome to your new addiction. :)

My opinion is based on what type of bowling you will be doing.  I cannot view your video so I can't see what your style is.  But if you are looking for a 2-ball arsenal (general league bowling), then I would recommend a Sigma Sting to complement your Uproar.  The gap between the two is a little larger, but the Sigma Sting will allow you to cover conditions with a little more oil.  If you are looking at more than a 2-ball arsenal (some tournament or multiple house bowling), then the Venom Shock would be a good step up from your Uproar with room to add more above that with something like a Covert Revolt or Cruel Intent/Raptor Talon.

Let us know what you decide to do and good luck with whichever ball you decide to get.

It's definitely not just for league bowling. I bowl lots of tournaments, sweepers, pot games in tons of different houses.

I normally keep 6-8 balls in my current arsenal and they are as follows:

Leagues/Tournys w/ house shots: Uproar, Victory Road Pearl, Wrecker

Advance Tournys/Sport shots: weakly drilled Manic @2000 no polish to control the backends, extremely aggressive drilled Reign On

I feel like I'm just missing a true bench mark and a heavy oiler.
If I were staying with Roto/Storm, I was leaning towards the Asylum as the benchmark and a Marvel-S for my heavy oil ball.

I feel like my main 3 overall would be the Asylum, Uproar, and Wrecker.

So a Motiv equivalent to that arsenal is what I'm looking for if I do switch over.

Thanks guys.

I realize my mistake.  Please ignore my ignorance.

I would agree with Matt on this.  The Venom Shock would make a great "benchmark" piece for most bowlers.  I think it would be similar to the IQ Tour (solid) but a little weaker and a little more push in the heads.

The Covert Revolt would be Motiv's answer to the Marvel S.  I would expect the Marvel S to have a little bit more push in the front, but nothing a little surface change can't duplicate.

I have 2 revolts, a venom shock, marvel s, asylum, and uproar. And the sting.

My 2 cents: get the Shock!!!!!! FOR SURE! Then I'd grab the Revolt. They are special balls and in my opinion more versatile than the sting or primal across multiple conditions.

And as far as the comparisons go: marvel S is earlier (more aggressive cover) with a touch more overall hook but the revolt plays across more conditions for me and has a motion closer to the IQ Tour Solid than the Marvel S.

I ended up going with the Venom Shock and Primal Rage. I might also going to fix up my GT1 and Recon Silver and throw those again too. Can't wait to drill up the new ones!

For me, the rage is really that..."wow I can't believe it came back from there" ball. It's really fun to throw honestly. The shock makes me say "wow" just as often, but for a different reason. It's really tough to describe that ball. But in a word, mattypizon summed it up. Special. You'll see. :)
