Looking at possibly switching my entire arsenal.
« on: November 06, 2017, 06:41:41 PM »
Good Evening Motiv Keglerz,

You may have seen my similar post in the Radical section. Im considering Motiv, Radical, and Hammmer. I’m been giving some deep thought (yes my ears are smoking) into possibly switching from Storm/Rotogrip.

What would you recommend for an arsenal of no more than 9 balls, not including the spare ball?
Obviously I’m looking for the Motiv only option here, but am open if there’s a viable reason to use another manufactures ball such as “Radical not having a great THS ball or something”.

Stats:

Ball Speed: 16-17mph
Rev: 300
Axis Rotation: 75 Degrees
Axis Tilt: 17 Degrees

My benchmark punchups are as follows (modified based on motion I’m looking for)

Sym - 50x3.5x40 with balance hole ar 2” below midline on the VAL
Asym - 40x4.25x45

I’m right handed and bowl both THS and Sport on a weekly basis.

Your thoughts and suggestions are highly appreciated!!!!!!

My 5 Motiv’s would be in this order

Jackal Ghost
United Revolt
Venom Shock
Venom Cobra
Tag Cannon

All bases covered with these 5, no doubt about it.

Would trade out the Jackal for a Cash or More Cash as guy says in another thread willing to mix and match brands.  Then again I need the even more extreme asym love as I am a bit rev challenged.

I throw almost exclusivly Motiv and I also bowl THS and PBA.

You only need 4.

Jackal Ghost
United Revolt
Venom Shock
Venom Cobra

If you can't cover what you see with these balls, you need to work on your game, not buy more equipment.

United to Shock? That's quite a jump.

You must be going by the Motiv Ball chart. The Shock is a stronger ball than where Motiv has it listed.

I'm going by numbers. 2.48 .034 vs 2.47 .056.

Ehh, what do I know. I only throw the balls three or four times a week.  ;D
I'm not doubting!!

Well so far so good on my More Cash but yeah that ball is fairly soft.  Tell you what ball will survive the Armageddon and that is my Ogre Urethane.  Been using it as a spare ball for over a month and not a single ding plus being super hard urethane its not absorbing anything at all.  Ball will out live me for sure which is good because its already my favorite ball.

Here is my input and I am sure will hear the heat:

Your goal is to build the best bag for the conditions you will see. If you are not a staffer, I feel you are limiting your best options if you go with one brand. Being brand loyal is great, however, it may also be handcuffing you.

You said you were looking at Radical, Motiv and Hammer. My suggestion is to get something from their line-up that are known to do well.

Radical  = Cash: Heavy Oil
Motiv = Venom Shock: smooth benchmark
Hammer = cherry vibe: for drier conditions

Then go from there, and fill in the gaps as you desire.

I feel changing brands is easier if you only have a couple of balls.  Personally I would prefer to use a single brand if I am looking at 5+ balls since the manufacturers are making the lineup with separation.  It would be difficult to get 2 or 3 medium strength balls from different companies and not have some overlap.

I like jkirkerx suggestion of getting one ball to see how you like it.  If you were to get a Venom Shock as an example, you will get to see how the ball works for you (shape and strength) and be able to build around it based on your style and the conditions you see.

And if you don't like it you can move to a different company without as much of a monetary impact.

The notion that being a staffer isn’t limiting but someone that is brand loyal is limited makes no sense. At the end of the day both are using 1 brand so it’s the same.

I found after I got past about 10 balls I started no longer caring about the brands but much more about the balls themselves.  Just about every brand has one or two killer balls and most have a fair amount of chaff they just churn over and over.  To be perfectly honest and blunt I am the first to admit I enjoy my arsenal but until you are able to hit the pocket with any of the balls in your bag at will worrying about the different balls is a bit of a fool's errand (but a fun one if don't have many other hobbies lol).  Getting there but not quite there yet.

I agree they are the same but perhaps one is more likely to look past the sacrifice when they don't have to drop a couple of grand on balls.

I don't consider it a "sacrifice" to be using only the Motiv brand. With their wide variety of bowling balls and 45 day release schedule, I can always find the next ball I need to fill a missing part of my arsenal. Since switching to all Motiv in February 2016, I'm bowling better than ever and I'm 55 now.

Sorry, no sacrifice here.
Balls: Motiv Trident Abyss, Motiv Golden Jackal, Motiv Hydra and Motiv Hyper Sniper. All made in the USA.

Motiv is more rounded than some of the other brands.  That said I have found some awesome balls from just about all the brands.  Yes if you are going to have an arsenal of 5 or 6 bowls or less going with one brand maybe makes sense.  I am not that person.
