Motiv ball that equals...
« on: January 09, 2015, 10:07:34 AM »
Storm Hy-Road.

I have been wanting to try Motiv for a little while now. I have heard lots of good things about them from many on here. But in my THS league, I just can't seem to put down my Hy-Road. Over the last 3 weeks alone, I shot 782, 726, 780 with it. But, I have had it for over 3-4 years now, and I am waiting for it to reach the end of it's life. So if I were to replace it with a Motiv ball, which comes closest to the Hy-Road? I was guessing the Sigma Sting, but I see on here they are being discontinued. Appreciate your thoughts on this.

The Tribal Fire would be the most similar to the original Hy-Road in my opinion. Motiv lists the Tribal Fire for "Light-Medium Oil" but its more of a pure medium oil ball for me.

I love it when a guy averages 250 with a ball and wants to replace it with something else. Why not get another Hy-Road?

Chill out dude.

First off, unless you can find the exact top weight, exact pin location getting another Hy-Road in no way means I get the same reaction I have now. And, FYI, I do have another Hy-Road undrilled in a box. But for as good as the Hy-Road is, that doesn't mean there isn't something better out there. Maybe if I go Motiv I average 260 or 270? And that is only the last 3 weeks, should I mention the 615 I shot with it about two months ago when it seemed like it wouldn't transition well and I left 10 pin after 10 pin that night? Don't be a tool...oh wait, too late.

I don't think Motiv really has a Hyroad to be quite honest.  The ball motion of the Tribal Fire is WAY different, and honestly Motiv as a whole has a lot different roll than Storm.

So you are offering up these two videos as evidence to support your argument?

The Hy-Road being thrown on a THS by a different bowler and the Tribal Fire being thrown on Kegel Beaten Path with a 3.6:1 ratio? And the drillings are not even close?

Honestly, if you don't really have any idea, then just don't comment.

As to the OP, I own BOTH balls and they are drilled the same. The Tribal Fire is the closest thing Motiv currently has to the Hy-Road.

I think everyone needs to take a step back here...

My intent here was to take a ball I really like, and seems to be working for me at least recently, and see if Motiv has something that offers a similar shape/oil handling capability as it. I would like to try a Motiv ball and if I could find one that slots into a spot where I have ball that has a lot of games on it, and could be close to death, I thought it would be a good fit. It would give me an idea of how Motiv would roll for me, and it would also potentially fill a hole that could come open in my lineup in the near future. Plus, it would give me something I can use more frequently, to fully give Motiv a try. No ball will ever equal another company's ball exactly, if it did, there would be lawsuits aplenty. Just wanted something close.

For those who took the time to answer thank you.

You miss the back half of the Tribal Fire video where it was being thrown on Main Street?  Ball videos weren't that great back in the Hyroad days, hard to find anything good.  I was offering those two videos based on the few minutes I put into searching to generally illustrate ball motion and shot shape.

Layouts are fine tuning options, they don't represent a monumental change in ball reaction.  Design characteristics will show through in ball reaction.

The Tribal Fire may be the closest thing Motiv has to the Hyroad . . but that doesn't mean it's really that close.

I didn't say I didn't really have any idea . . I have an idea, but I was trying to present it in a more friendly way.  Factually, Motiv doesn't have a Hyroad.  Overall hook potentials may be similar with the Fire getting the nod by a few boards, but ball motion and shot shape are not.  Hyroad core: 2.57rg, .046diff, Tribal Fire core, 2.55rg, .037diff (both 15lb core).  Fusion Hybrid is a stronger cover than R2S Hybrid.  The Hyroad has more length and a smoother finish, while the Fire has a much stronger response to the dry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5HO4HCKpwc  Another different layout

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TValYO20qB4  Another different layout

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGBT19lvf5Q  Different hand and layout

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuiGPr_8enw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jif7qX2JU4w

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9avgMWBn0yI

Now the Tribal Fire videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNV1cvUm0fs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ju3lTKyQd0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoQyBNQ4bnQ

Different layouts, different bowlers, but extremely similar ball roll and reaction throughout in regards to each ball as compared to itself from video to video.  The Tribal Fire may be the closest thing Motiv has to the Hyroad, but again I reiterate that still doesn't mean they are very similar.  If the OP is looking for the closest Motiv offering to the Hyroad, the Tribal Fire would be it.  If he is looking for something SIMILAR to the Hyroad within the current Motiv line, it doesn't exist.

"So if I were to replace it with a Motiv ball, which comes closest to the Hy-Road?"

This leads me to believe that he wants a ball similar to the Hyroad.  Yes I realize I'm answering a question he didn't ask, but if several people suggest the Tribal Fire and he gets one only to find out it's quite different from the Hyroad, he will most likely be very disappointed.  In my opinion, Motiv does not currently have a ball close enough to the Hyroad to even make a comparison, and I feel that is more relevant information.

If I walk into a bar and ask for an oatmeal stout and they tell me the closest thing they have is a Newcastle and I go ahead and buy it, I'm not going to be happy.  If they tell me they really don't have anything close enough to suggest, then they're giving me the information I'm really after.  I may then select a different beer and really enjoy it, such as Jorge may really like a Tribal Fire.  I would suggest that if he wants to try a Motiv ball, he may look to replace something else in his arsenal that may be a closer fit or match, and look elsewhere at the moment for a Hyroad replacement.

In that case, you were right all along, and I agree.  The Tribal Fire is the closest thing to the Hyroad that Motiv offers.

Just...wow.

classy response. You do realize that the Hy-Road is still produced today and most distributors and on line shops allow you to select your top and pin when you order, so matching shouldn't be difficult. As for the rest of your response... you ask for something equal to the Hy-Road, not better or different. If you can't match a Hy-Road to a Hy-Road, how can you match anything else to it? Let's be honest here, you just want something different that rolls similar. Wait for the new Rocket then. If its just Motiv that you want, then get the ball that you want and not the one that these online professionals advise. Because as you can tell, the Fire isn't "equal " to the Hy-Road, but it's the closest thing available. How close? That's a matter of opinion.

P.S.- it's not the ball that will bring you up to that 260-270 you are striving for, it's execution. Unless you try Radical because they give you 20 pins when you drill them ::)

tkkshop,
All I can say wow...I guess you don't really know as much as you think you do about bowling. This response proves it. Any other biases you'd like to get out while you are at it?

P.S. Did you watch the PBA World Championships yesterday. Do you really think better execution would have helped Stuart Williams carry the 10 pin on the right lane, or would a change of ball helped? If it's the former, you are a fool. If it's the latter, then you are a tool. Your choice.
