Steven, as I said in my post #13 ... As with any ball from any company, the wrong drilling and/or wrong surface on a ball will not give positive results. My Rage performs smooth off the spot, so apparently I have the right drilling and surface. The bowlers you mentioned that prefer smoother off the spot apparently don't have the right layout and surface on their Rage or else the ball simply won't match up for them no matter what.. Sometimes a ball simply won't match up with a bowler no matter how it is drilled and the surface adjusted. The Octane is sort of in that class for me. I have it workable, but it is still not a good match up for me.
Since the majority seem to like the Rage, I imagine that those that don't like it and can't get it to perform to their satisifaction regardless of the drilling and surface, simply don't match up to it. I'm sure you have had balls like that as I have also.
Brick, we're going around in circles on this. I have a few relatively simple layouts that I fine tune with pin up or pin down, and a balance hole when necessary for desired effect. I have more resurfacing supplies than most pro shops, and I alter surface as required. I'm satisfied that my current drill and cover prep are appropriate for the ball.
I'll repeat that the Primal Rage is big backend ball. That's what Motiv's intent was/is, and they succeeded. My Rage moves off the spot very quick -- mission accomplished. However, I've come to the conclusion that it's more movement than I trust on most of the conditions I see, especially sport conditions where I need to manage the backend. It doesn't make the ball bad -- just a bad choice for what I'm looking for. I will save it for the longer PBA sport patterns where the ball has less friction available to go crazy. That's where the Primal Rage has shined so far on tour.
Again, it's not a matter of wrong drill or wrong surface. It was simply the wrong ball for me in the first place. I've since punched up a Radical Yeti Uncaged identical to my Primal Rage, and it better meets my needs for an aggressive pearl. It's similar to the Rage in many respects, but just more predictable, at least for me. That's the way ball selection goes sometimes.
