Sanded my Primal Rage... With excellent results!
« on: April 06, 2015, 09:35:39 AM »
More and more people are saying that solid, pearl, and hybrid is all marketing, and surface means more than anything, so I decided to take my Rage down to 2000 grit because I need more control in my game. I have to say that it made my rage roll like a solid instead of a skid flip pearl. Usually I start to struggle around game 2 when I hit transition with the primal rage because it gets jumpy on me. I didn't see it last night. It just kept reacting smoothly and crushed the pocket all night. I shot 631, and had a shot all night. The shot was wetter, so I had to close down my angles. I would have shot much higher if the operator didn't keep throwing the ball too far outside.

I took part in a clinic a little while ago now and one of the guests was actually a former PBA Tour ball rep and he did tend to agree with the marketing comment.  Also agreed that surface is very key as well.  So it sounds like your experiment paid off!!  Nice job.  I actually did the same thing to my Ascent Apex.  When I needed to ball down to that ball, OOB it was a little too long and would not slow down enough to get to the pocket correctly.  I hit it with 2000 and then a worn 4000 pad and first time trying it, I got a great reaction.

I got into the habit of using less surface so my ball would give me more carry on off hits and to try to help control how much the lanes transitioned. I did have more luck carry, but it was so much harder to adjust that I actually fell behind most nights. I'm hoping I am on to something with this. So you use some surface on a dry lane ball? I have been killing with my misfit pearl at 500 with royal compound. It has probably 30+ games on that surface, but it is still giving an amazing reaction, so I don't want to touch it up

Yes...I just tried it on my Apex, as it kept going too long on me, so thought I would add some surface to get it to read a little earlier.  My thinking was due to the high rg of the ball, it has some built in length....more than I expected when I put a pin up layout on the ball.  I have considered changing it to pin down, but thought a quick cheap and easy test would be to add surface.  It still cleared the heads pretty good for me (on a fairly burned up shot)...so happy with the surface change for now.

I wish you the best of scores with your surface change on your apex
