Description: The Freestyle is MOTIV’s newest release in the entry level category. In fact it will be replacing the long lasting Ascent and Ascent Apex line. It will utilize the proven Recon Core, but with the new Turmoil LFP (Low Friction Pearl) Coverstock. This Turmoil Cover is a modified version of the same coverstock used on the famous Venom Shock. You also have two choices in color, pink & black or blue & black.
Reaction: The Freestyle will be in play when you want a ball that can get down the lane and never have to worry about it reading too early. As far as shape goes, it’s very controllable and although it’s very continuous it never changes directions too fast, which makes it ideal on patterns that just flat out hook. In my first few sessions I tried using it in league on a typical house shot and I was surprised how straight I was able to play in the track area, but was even more impressed that the ball still got through the pins very well. Although it does fit in the entry level category, remember it uses a modified cover of the Venom Shock. Giving it a stronger layout or just adding a little surface can make this ball more useable than just on drier conditions too. So far a little surface on my pin down one has made it a very good option on league conditions.
Comparisons: To give you some comparisons the Graffiti Tag is overall stronger and also responds to friction much faster. When the Tag is just too much ball or just too strong down lane the Freestyle is an ideal fit. Now compared to the Ascent Apex the Freestyle is a little longer, but not much, and isn’t quite as even throughout the lane. The Freestyle provides better continuation than the Ascent Apex, but in terms of total hook they are very close. I think the Freestyle is an upgraded version of the Ascent or Ascent Apex line. Once again, because of the similar cover that it shares with the Venom Shock, this will be a nice piece for when a Venom Shock is too strong as they have similar overall motions.
Summary: I would recommend the Freestyle to anyone who is looking to purchase a quality ball at a very affordable price. An entry level ball is an important utility piece to have and you’ll never know when you need it.
